Most of us are having the hardest time admitting Shi is out but the fact is she is. They can not take her.

That is not a fact whatsoever. 1-event gymnasts are put on teams, and win medals, ALL THE TIME. You do not leave off the best UB worker for...what even? Being scared of needing a 5th vault or floor routine? SO many medals and iconic routines at the Olympics would have been lost if teams had that mentality.

She has a shoulder injury, impactful on bars
She has a leg injury, impactful on landing bars
She's taped up tighter than a mummy
Nationals and first night of trials was unable to or felt it was unsafe/unwise to compete
She's a sneeze away from being injured further
It has been clearly stated specialists must be top 2 (????) on two events to be considered. Her competing only bars does not meet that criteria.
If she can do it, Girl, handle your business!!!!!! You've earned it.
If she can't, it is what it is and many fans will be sad. The effect on her, I choose not to speculate on.

Apparently Skinner live streamed herself watching trials. I've not watched it, but oh boy the reactions people on Twitter are having.

Her injury is so "impactful" that she won Bars. It's pointless to speculate further when she's hitting the routine, "what if" can be said about anything. The potential for injury to anyone, at any moment, is universal.

There is no criteria of needing to be top 2 on two events. That's just a vague thing said very early in the season about what they would expect to need to see.

It's totally premature to eliminate Jones from conversation before the latter half of a Trials competition. The committee should tell her to withdraw now, if that were the case. She is ranked 1st on bars, which in any other situation would be unthinkable to drop.

Not suggesting her position isn't precarious, and that she and Lee on the same team wouldn't have a lot of anxiety, but none of the other options are convincing. And we don't yet know the extent of her knee problem.

Again, I do think she needs to knock a bar routine out of the park night 2, preferably with the layout jaeger.

re: impactful
She continues to get injured, that's impactful no two ways around that
She watered down her routine because the injury is impactful
She's limping and taped up to Hades and back because her injury is impactful
Taking her for one event that her injuries can/will have an impact on as training intensifies through the Olympics feels foolish to me and others
If she can do it, Girl, more power to you.

You just said what I said

Hello!!!!

I was so upset when I found out she was out. She was one of my favorites on that team just from seeing the second day of Trials. I still watch her floor routine from time to time.

I was even more upset about what happened with Raducan, though. I hate the 2000 Olympics in hindsight. So many bad things happened.
Yes, that was really upsetting. I was at those Trials and her beam and floor were so good.

I get the impression from Shilese’s character that she will
Be thinking that she has 4 weeks of gymnastics left. She’s been cleared, she’s an adult athlete who knows her body. She also probably knows, as we’ve discussed here, that once someone is named to the team, it’s very unlikely they will be removed. She’ll put her body through absolute hell to get to Paris. But it is a fine balancing act

How's everybody feeling on the morning after the night before? I don't think I've even properly processed the fact that Kayla is injured and out. What a night.
I am sad about the injuries
Okay, but how risky is it actually to take Shilese Jones? Absolute worst case scenario, she goes down in warmups before TF, and has to be replaced by Jordan on UB (assuming a Simone/Suni/Jordan/Jade/Shilese team). Based on this year's scores, that would likely lose them about 0.75-1.00 points. This is not a trivial loss, but TFs rarely come down to < 1 point these days.

On the other hand, there is no one else who could net the team nearly the same UB score as Shilese. Another option would be to choose a fifth member who would bring in a high score on another event, but I'm struggling to think who could bring that, and on what event. Their best beamers, vaulters, and floor workers are otherwise "on the team" at this point, or out with injury.

ETA: this is based on a scenario wherein Shilese is brought only for bars.
i suppose it depends on the nuances. If she is healthy enough to swing bars, I would bring her for bars and maybe beam if her knee feels up to it.

If her knee is bad but maybe she doesn’t dismount on to mats except in team final … probably not.

She didn't make the team with a broken foot, she made the team healthy competing AA.

She broke her foot once she got to Beijing and they agreed to keep her on the team as long as she could still land her UB dismount.
Yes, she and Sam both got injured in China. Sam got injured either in podium training or in warm ups for team prelims.

Perhaps Shi is named to the team with a caveat, she needs to be able to do VT and FX before they leave for Paris. Even if it is a FTY and a watered down FX. If too injured, replaced by alternate.
