They needed some luck anyway whoever they picked, but Australia’s specialist strategy isn’t going to deliver any event finals. They are 8th on PH and HB (after 2pc) but there are three subdivisions to go.
They weren’t concerned with event finals, they were concerned with qualifying to Paris as the individual apparatus top qualifer from a non qualified team or AAer.

Well they aren’t going to do that either. PH is going to be decided in the final, and Tin Srbic is ahead of Tyson Bull on HB.

I know, but AUS MAG shifted from team qualifying (when they knew it wasn’t possible) to qualifying individuals to Paris. They felt they had a better chance of individuals “winning” the individual berths to Paris, that didn’t mean they needed to make event finals but simply rank as the top athlete.

Picking a PH specialist over Heath was an idiotic choice.
Sewant was never going to qualify this route, that field is simply packed and he was literally going up against McClenaghan.
The fact that he only did PH is really the big dig.

Should Thorpe be on the team? Yeah. Do I think he’d have qualified as an AAer? No tbh. I doubt Stephens’ 79.6 holds up either. So in the end, it’s moot, but they did all this nonsense for absolutely no gain.

How many more subdivisions are left? Obviously team USA needs Malone for HB alone, any other HB guys out there that could be helpful next year?

China struggling on vault. Looked like Shi Cong stung his ankles on the Randi. Another fall for Liu Yang.

Tied with GB for 10th out of 12 teams with three vaults so far. Not where either team would have expected to be.

Yeesh!!! German guy nearly smacked his shins on the bar on his dismount.

To their credit, China MAG do seem to have a knack for going hard in TFs after flopping in prelims, but this seems like a less experienced team than last years.

Zapata’s back 3/2 punch double front pike from a power hurdle is never not absolutely insane to me. 14.466, just barely into EF range.

I don’t think anyone would’ve predicted Spain to have a point lead on China after 1 rotation! China didn’t dominate pbars the way they have in the past, just 1 guy in the top 8.

Su Weide scratched pbars…I wonder if he injured his ankle on vault? Nevermind, he just did a gorgeous high bar set sans the lunge on landing

Joel Plata must share a doctor with Dalaloyan.

Germany looking in a lot of trouble to qualify a full team to Paris. This could be the first time Germany (United Germany/East Germany) would fail to qualify a team to the Olympics. (Germany did not compete at the 1948 Olympics, but re-entered for 1952.) Will be interesting.

It was going to be an uphill battle even before Andi injured his knee unfortunately. They are fighting though, and managed 3 13s on their nemesis pommels.

ETA: huge 14.6 for Nils! He’s into 7th!

Another rough rotation for China. 10.6 for You Hao and mid 13s for Sun Wei/Shi Cong.

Netherlands hitting high bar meanwhile Spain has sat 2 of 3 vaults so far. Zapata’s tsuk dbl pike can hopefully salvage that rotation for them.

The Netherlands still have pommels, but…could they be knocking on the door of their first ever Olympic team berth? (Did they qualify as a team back in the 30s?)
