I think China in 5th should probably still be OK for team finals.
Switzerland, Italy and Korea can (will?) pass China, but don’t think Canada, Hungary, or France can. China might sneak into team finals in 8th!

Dolgopyat and Karimi are going to qualify via the AA standings, so Yulo is looking very good for the floor spot at the moment. He doesn’t actually need to make the final if no one else eligible does.

If we are assuming Germany, Spain and Turkey are safe, along with the USA who are mathematically qualified, the top eight AAers for the Paris spots (1 per country) are:

Karimi (Kazakhstan) 83.232
Dolgopyat (Israel) 82.999
Artur Davtyan (Armenia) 82.032
Kovtun (Ukraine) 81.931
Schmidt (Netherlands) 81.831
Soares (Brazil) 81.064
Van den Keybus (Belgium) 80.798
Muntean (Romania) 80.665

Several of them still have a chance, theoretically at least, of team qualification. Karimi, Davtyan and Muntean don’t.

I think we can say Karimi, Dolgopyat and Davtyan are very likely to take AA spots.

What the hell is going on???
  • Carlos Yulo gets a 0 vault and is out of vault finals — and he’s the best in the world — and AA, where he could medal.
  • Daiki Hashimoto gets beaten by 2 teammates instead of clobbering them like usual but will still compete because Japan decided before the competition started to Roza Galieva him.
  • The other (clear) best AAer in the world, Zhang Boheng, is not competing at all because China prioritized the Asian Games.
  • No Lee Chih-Kai
  • No Zou Jingyuan
  • USA counted two 12s on an event but is still second.
  • China also has a 29 and a 30 year old competing. They’ve never had guys that old competing.
  • Oleg Vernaiev is competing but won’t get near the final.

Zhang Boheng went to Asian games. China MAG sent their A team to the Asian Games. They don’t give a damn about these Worlds, they’re already qualified to Paris and prioritized dominating at the Asian Games at home in China.

I don’t really understand the surprise throughout this thread about China MAG. This strategy was being talked about all year. If Asian Games hadn’t been postponed to coincide with Worlds they would have sent their top athletes to Worlds, but it is what it is.

China MAG Prioritized the Asian Games, since they’ve already qualified to Paris, hence the exclusion of Zou and Zhang and others here. Hashimoto will still be in the AA–the JPN federation decided prior to TQ they would “Galieva” him into AA finals, should his teammates best him

edit: Passion beat me

I edited my post to reflect that.

But that still is a bizarre thing.

Like, who schedules this shit?

The issue was the Asian Games were originally scheduled for 2022 but were postponed because of Covid. It wouldn’t have interfered with Worlds in 2022, Asian Games were in September and Worlds were in November. The Covid postponement is what made them run into Worlds this year.

Could be, could be.

Honestly, this is such a fucked up competition at this point that I sort of don’t even care to watch. And that’s a dirty feeling…

How much did Hashimoto’s mistake on PH cost him? I am assuming without the mistake he would be leading

And it’d cost the FIG a fortune to reschedule (and probably find a new host) at only a year’s notice.

Yeah, with the MAG things are pretty straightforward. It’s the women where things are more complicated for China. The whole thing is just the after effects of covid continuing to work themselves through the system.

Am I right in saying that once these Asian Games are completed, that’s the end of all pandemic related competition changes in elite?
