Well I think that almost everything that could have happened happened to someone in that competition. Wild. Really fun day of gymnastics and lots to chew over.

Six(!!!) surgeries on one elbow–2 in March alone–tend to do that.

Team USAG is literally limping towards tokyo. It’s gonna be “last man standing” again.

I personally would love a team of Simone, Suni, Morgan and Riley but that’s just because I am a sucker for leg extension and pointed toes.

I feel even more letdown for the gymnasts with injuries than I usually do. They did an extra year of training. That’s a huge investment, and it probably is more frustrating than normal.

The way Riley picked her foot up, I thought of Mustafina right away too :(. It made me worry for her knee but I admit to an irrational knee injury phobia. Anyone have an update on her?

Edit: Per Scott Bregman, Riley is getting an MRI per Tom.

I just watched Eaker on floor. It’s too late to analyse it. But the whole thing is a mess. Ironically, the new tumbling was pretty good. She made the whip triple and the 3.5 punch was, MUCH less bad than I had feared.

But she bailed on the front full after the 2.5, so she repeated the punch front. The rest of the routine was just a string of absolutely failed leaps (three!) and a deeeeeeep double pike landing.

Fong keeps on having her do ring leaps. STOP!!! She cannot do themmmmmm

Yeah she definitely needs a scan. That landing didn’t look right. It completely wouldn’t surprise me if she gets some really bad news…

And not really a whole extra year. Many gyms were closed for months due to the pandemic. Some even opened, and then closed AGAIN when there were surges.

I feel so bummed about Riley. I hope she only tweaked her ankle at worse.

I refuse to give up on Morgan, though it seems most here have already written her off. I thought she was underscored a bit on beam and floor. Her new floor exercise was a gorgeous routine and I love her new music. I hope she makes Trials and with another month to train before then she could be back up to form.

Jordan did awesome but I just can’t get into her. Her lack of artistry or real choreo on beam and floor is just a no for me. And that strange casual stroll to the end of the corner before one of her tumbling passes on floor - wtf was that?

I love Simone’s new floor and music - except for that ‘OW!’ thing that she’s used in all of her fx routines. It annoys the hell out of me.

Evaluated Using USAG Vid with Judges’/Side Angle:

I was at work all day but I’m excited to watch and judge now! Do we know if Hurd has successfully petitioned to Nationals? I read Chellsie has woohoo!!

Chiles just needs to keep doing her thing and she’s on that team. Stoked for her!!

Slowly making my way through all the routines and good lord Eaker’s “”"“3 1/2"”"" wasn’t even REMOTELY close. Even worse than at American Classic.

Jade did surprisingly well on bars but I don’t think she is looking at a top 4 AA finish required to make the four person team. I hope she doesn’t give up her reserved spot.

ETA . . . Grace was top four coming back from an injury and she says she has upgrades planned! (I wonder if we will see said upgrades but fans can dream for the next few weeks.)

If she has to choose before Trials I think there’s absolutely no way she gives it up. If she did, she’d fully deserve to go from 100% guaranteed to go the Olympics to sitting at home, frankly, for being that indescribably foolish.
