I’m on earth shattering relief that it’s finally over. I burnt out on Olympics after qualifications and have been running on fumes all week trying to keep up with everything happening.

Super looking forward to the new quad and being able to enjoy simple meets of little consequence again. Three straight months of every single routine mattering for something is exhausting.

In spite of everything (injuries, judging errors, disappointing performances), the Games and the lead up to them were really fun.

But I'm super glad it's over.

Maybe they always felt this exhausting, but especially after how nervous the US girls looked in quals, I was just dreading something devastating happening the whole time. That being said, I thought the team and AA meets for both men and women were really exciting and overall satisfying
Maybe it’s because they’ve done it before? But I do think that the huge profile they and the sport have in the US isn’t necessarily a good thing

Because Sabrina was groomed to be the star of Romanian gymnastics and usher in a new era of Romania being a regular feature on the medal podiums. Aside from Brazil and Italy stepping up in a big way, Barbosu was outperforming Sabrina and, to quote the meme, they took that personally.
To be fair, she's doing a decent job at that. She finished 4th on floor at Worlds and then made two Olympic finals, for one of which she is presumably the rightful bronze medalist. Barbosu is lovely but it's not like Voinea isn't doing her job (although I cannot stand to watch her).

What are people's thoughts on a 7.5 E for this? I had 1.9 off in deductions, plus artistry (I would probably have gone 0.3). So I had a 7.8.

I know she put hands down on the jump full, but that's only a 0.5. Her average artistry deduction was a 0.25 (she had a 1.8 total between 7 judges).

I think 7.5 is a little harsh, no?

My very rough number (I've only done a little review of the last COP) is similar to yours - low 8s, plus artistry.

This routine is a great example of one of my biggest gripes with the modern COP. I think a casual follower of the sport - even someone who enjoys watching more often than the Olympics, but not into it enough to learn every rule - would have a hard time understanding this routine as a 7.5 E score.

I've watched gymnastics for a very long time, and I struggle accepting it at 7.5, and maybe even an 8. That's not meant as a desire to return to the days of all the hit routines being between 9.862 and 9.999825. But deductions have become so nitpicky, that we now have not awful routines down in the 7s, and it's amazing to break an 8. I'm not sure that's any better for the sport than scores bunched at the top of the scale or NCAA 10s are.

The .1/.3/.5 scale of deductions is a factor in lower scores, but we've been living with that for almost 20 years now, and and I feel like deductions are becoming harsher and harsher. Bringing back the .05 deduction has always been one of my greatest wishes for the post-10 COP. It would probably pull up the scores of well-executed routines by a few tenths, and help better separate a the outstanding routines from the good routines.

I'll save my rant on the current artistry deductions for another post.

What I’d like to see was a understandable separation between gymnasts. But little tiny errors are so visible to judges when the gymnast is super clean, whereas ugly routines have too many to count

I feel like opening up the range of deductions to be .1, .2, .3., .4, or .5 would really help in this regard. I get that it might also increase the subjectivity some, as there is less ambiguity between just a few options, but it could really help to differentiate errors.

I don't think medium deductions should be 0.3. It should never have been .1, .3. and .5 deductions.
Small medium and large should be 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.5 should be for very large errors.

Think about it. 0.3 is the difference between a Back handspring and a back layout on beam. Yet it's also a 35° knee bend? Come on. That's always been asinine. We've just gotten used to something bad and have forgotten.
