2021 American Classic (Suni Lee, Grace McCallum, Kara Eaker, + more competing)

Still think it’s premature to write off Suni for the main team. She didn’t attempt AA until Nationals in 2019, and her vault wasn’t done to any appreciable level until camp.

If anyone should be worried, it’s Kara. Suni’s now outscoring her on her best event (with no dismount!) and she brings little else to the table.

I cannot believe Flo charges $30/mo for Stanford-home-meet quality coverage.

McCallum always has these huge potential upgrades on social media, but I can’t think of any that have successfully materialized in the last 3 years. I think it’s top 2 AA or bust for her since there’s no point giving her the +1 spot.

Having not seen her routine, I’m not underwhelmed by McCallum coming here and scoring a 13.9 on beam. I’m guessing she didn’t fall, so she’s continuing to prove herself as one of the more consistent contenders.

And I know it’s a monster point-grabber, but one of these days Eaker is gonna land a loso on her face in that free cartwheel + loso + loso series. All three of those skills are super low and deserve height deductions. She’s eating her knees on each landing.

We’ll have to see if she can continue that through to trials. She had a strong Classic showing in 2019, but then fell twice night 1 of nationals, was saved after her own UB fall by Hurd’s UB meltdown at selection camp, and had a fall in Q/TF in Stuttgart. Certainly, no one aside from Simone can really list consistency as a strength, so I think it’ll come down to who falls apart the least at nationals/trials, and McCallum has shown she can capitalize on that even when she herself has a fall.

The way Eaker’s BB has steadily devolved since 2017 is disappointing. It’s like Armine/Al enjoy seeing these girls fail.

Maybe Grace opted out of being shown so she wouldn’t be seen on Flo. As a fork you, flo. (Did it say she opted out or she just wasn’t shown? Because we all know how the camera operators like to show people standing around instead of gymnastics)

I am also worried for Suni.

How and when did she injure her ankle?

There has been a near 18 month break from competition. There has been plenty of time to rest and rehab injuries without the pressure of imminent competitions.

Injuries happen often in training, no?

She did seem pretty weak on floor. I didn’t see her other events, but I saw the PT vids. I’m a little alarmed. There’s still time, though. I hope we can see her at her best. She should be contending for three EF spots.

Lots of injuries this year.

I have to admit I’m surprised. I figured that with forced time off, and the worldwide cultural reckoning, this would be the least-injured Olympic year in the post-Nadia era. I suppose that none of the coaches and athletes have really done this before, but I would’ve thought the spate of injuries would have been within the first couple of months of gyms reopening.

I can see why athletes might want to come and do low difficulty routines. 18 months is a long time when you are 18 (or especially 16). Tumbling while limping is something else, though…

The more meets that happen the more impressive Jordan Chile’s first two meets are looking. I know a lot can happen between now and trials and I’m not expecting Jordan to make the Olympic team. But, at this point, I also wouldn’t be surprised if she did.

Not sure what the specific ankle injury is, but she mentioned it in February during Winter Cup and said the ankle set back her VT/FX training.

What worries me more is that she also reported Achilles pain at the time. That can be a ticking time bomb. I still have her on the main team, though.

Man, can you imagine if someone like Simone was at a competition being filmed by flo and said, “I will not be on your broadcast, you scumbag child porn peddlers” and then had her coaches go stand in front of the camera so all they got was Laurant’s back? (or I guess, go blow on the camera connectors since it seems like whatever their setup is, it is fragile and crappy as hell) It would be EPIC.

@Concorde - I totally get your rationale. But the Code doesn’t say that, does it? You’re making a rational inference from what the Code should say. Ring Jump doesn’t say “if front leg higher than 45 degrees - credit split jump to ring”. You’re making an inference based on the lack of D Panel instruction to downgrade, and the presence of an E Panel deduction for leg below horizontal.

I totally agree that that is how it should be evaluated. But the descriptions in the ring jump and split ring jump don’t talk to each other.

Ah! I should have checked the Help Desk too! Thank you!

ETA: It’s totally stupid that that clarification is in the Help Desk. God knows why the Code cannot integrate these rules.

Do you want to judge Euros? let me know if you want edit access (if you don’t already have it!)
