In addition Kentucky Winter Classic, a new competition, was announced on Gymnastics Now. It’s an invitational meet for men’s and women’s artistic athletes up to level 10. It will also serve as the final qualifier for the Nastia Liukin Cup, with two women’s gymnasts qualifying from the event to the Nastia Liukin Cup that same weekend.

They have done a similar thing before in Greensboro- held the GGI meet the same week as the NLC and (at that time) American Cup. It was also the last qualifier for the NLC. They held the level ten sessions on like Tuesday or Wednesday instead of Saturday.

Tickets are now on sale. Get them here.

Pros: The tickets are reasonably(ish) priced. They're using Eventbrite, so the fees are low.

Cons: Bleacher seating, and it's all General Admission. All the (cheaper) floor seats are sold out, so it may say "tickets from $20" but only GA bleacher seats are available and cost more than that (in the case of senior women, a lot more than that!).

current national teams members who are not on the Winter Cup list (and thus potentially not eligible for an early spring assignment--not that USAG has published selection criteria)
Simone Biles
Jade Carey
Kayla DiCello
Amelia Disidore
Reese Esponda
Kieryn Finnell
Shilese Jones
Joscelyn Roberson
Izzy Stasi
Leanne Wong

Gabby Hardie is also not on the list, but she is still a junior. Suni Lee isn't on the national team but is also not listed to compete.

Take it all with a grain of salt, though. We've seen USAG struggle to get out accurate rosters before, and there's always last minute changes.

Trinity Wood, Waldorf, MD/Capital Gymnastics National Training Center
Huh. A little interesting that she's going down to VA for training vs. Hill's. Waldorf <-> Gaithersburg and Waldorf <-> Burke is about the same distance-wise and take the same roads, just north vs. south. I hope her training times allow her to go opposite of the main traffic, otherwise that one-hour estimated drive can easily double and I think people are still a little traumatized by that 27-hour traffic jam on 95 a couple of years ago.

Sometimes those hometowns aren't accurate (I think sometimes the birthplace gets listed). Like Ly Bui still has Swisher, Iowa listed, which is nowhere close to GAGE. Tiana listed Pleasanton, CA and Canby, OR for Brooke Pierson. Entirely possible Trinity Wood's family moved closer to Burke years ago. She's been at Capital since she was a wee little level 4.

More generically, Hill's vs. Capital, I know Kelli Hill's opposition to homeschooling has led some parents to choose Capital instead. Kelli wants kids in school, public or private, so they have a little slice of normal; the training schedule is structured to facilitate that and the local school system has been very willing to work to accommodate elite gymnasts. At least previously, the Capital philosophy was gymnastics gymnastics gymnastics, school is this annoying thing that gets in the way. And there are families who believe wholeheartedly that homeschooling a couple of hours a day and focusing exclusively on gymnastics is the right decision for their kid--those families end up at Capital.

I never knew that about Kelli! That’s pretty awesome.
