IIRC, it was something about the date was bad luck but 08 was a good omen... I think the number 8 is good luck and the olympics started on 8/8/8... I'm sure someone else will remember better than I will

I do remember the Beijing Olympics intentionally started on 8/8/08 at 8:08 PM because eight is a lucky number in Chinese culture. I don't know about the Athens Olympics unless they took the 04 part of the year as a bad omen since 4 is an unlucky number.
