Yes!
I was never a great gymnast, so I was able to be successful with diving.
We had multiple gymnasts do well with diving, but we also had the same number of gymnasts quit because of the air awareness.
My senior year a freshman who was high up there in state gymnastics for MAG tried to do diving and he could only do feet landing dives, anything head entry he would go over or under, he couldn’t get over that and eventually quit.
Meanwhile, a rival school had a high level state gymnast in MAG and he ended up destroying all of us, ended up stat champion twice and then went to Indiana for diving (at the time a major diving college).
There is a junior diver now in the school district next to my town who is a former gymnast. He was rocking front triple somis for 7s and 8s and back triple somis for similar, but any required dive he really struggles with and opts for just a single somi. it is quite interesting that he has no front entry dives at all, but he makes it work and was 4th at state championships.
When I coached middle school diving I had an 8th grade boy that was super powerful on the board but couldn’t finesse dives due to his gymnast back ground, meanwhile a 6th grade girl who had dance and ballet was able to beat him multiple times because of her amazing toe point and her ability to nail the crap out of basic dives for huge numbers.
