I think Skinner enjoys the training life more than college or working. She’s going to keep at it whether she has a chance or not. And she just likes trying out things even if they aren’t suited to her or to competition. OR she’s so invested in the picture of herself as a top level gymnast that she can’t admit she might not make it even if the reasons are things like illness and lack of preparation. She’s just not in touch with the reality of where she’s at?
Yeah, in this stage of the game, wouldn’t one be just working on perfecting the skills in her repertoire and not adding new ones? 8 weeks is not enough time to master a new skill.
And one would think it makes sense since Worlds are this year and with Carey and Biles likely out, Skinner would have strong odds at a VT medal and perhaps gold.
But she said she isn’t going for Worlds and will head back to school. Although she also said she wants to conceive a child.
Exactly. She should focus on Worlds instead of the Olympics. She actually has a legit shot at being taken for Worlds. She’s delusional about her Olympic chances.
It’s ironic she’s so adamant about not wanting 2021 Worlds, because it’s almost the same situation as Montreal: even if floor’s up for grabs, she could walk AA and VT medals.
AA migggght be a stretch, but I can see her for VT/FX and someone with UB/BB and two strong AAers.
It is still 4 gymnast teams with 3 per apparatus, so someone has to drop on each apparatus.
If they don’t make the Olympics I would think DiCello, McClain, and Blakely would be front runners for Worlds.
Athletes like Eaker, McCallum, Wong who might not make the team would likely opt out of worlds and head to NCAA like planned or do the Biles tour.
My guess is that the US will end up with a pretty limited number of healthy gymnast by worlds, even less so than usual. Aside from very leftfield choices like Memmel and Hernandez, most athletes will be attempting to make Tokyo and thus will be aiming to peak for July. Meaning anyone attempting worlds will have to go all out twice in quite a short period of time. The injury risk there has got to be higher than normal. Before she got covid, I’d have said that was a real advantage for someone like Skinner who’s barely ever injured.
Maybe they should crowdfund it. If I knew that’s where my donation would go, I’d throw a few quid in to keep teams four instead of three, and I doubt I’d be the only one.
