And that even includes all the team medals… Is that it? I feel like that’s a lot less than in the past…

I will point out that ALL of the all-around medalists, both men and women, won an apparatus medal as well. That has not always been the case. (Gabby Douglas and Viktoria Komova are the only women exceptions in recent years, but there are quite a few guys, I think.)

Do you think that’s because of the specialist rules? If you give a team medal to the event medalist you could add at least 3 more to the list.

That’s amazing… it’s like the good ol days! Gabby and Bridget are the only 2 AA winners to not have an individual event medal

Actually, believe it or not, Uchimura did not get an apparatus medal before, too — twice!
2016 Rio. Also 2009 Worlds.

This seems like yet another validation of giving World Cup specialists spots. Better those specialists who are great at their events win medals than the great all-arounder who is “pretty good” at an event.

I wonder. If they didn’t have the specialists spots and regional championship spots teams probably would have been bigger. Jade, Andrade and sort of Ferrari owe their spots to the funky qualification systems. (Ferrari was originally a +1 before Villa got hurt.) Jade and Ferrari could have been named outright to a larger team. (Although Jade was able to pace herself well without needing to peak at trials). Andrade “owes” her +1 spot to the new system, but under the old system teams had a second chance to qualify at a test event. Under the old system, Brazil might have been able to send a whole team.

The qualification process is absurdly stupid, but the principle of 4-member teams + lots of individuals qualified multiple routes was GREAT – because look at all the medalists that might not have even participated!!!
  • Andrade all-around silver
  • Andrade vault gold
  • Skinner vault silver
  • Iliankova bars silver
  • Guan beam gold
  • Carey floor gold
  • Ferrari floor silver
  • Kaya pommel bronze
  • Liu rings gold
  • You rings silver
  • Petrounias rings bronze
  • Shin Jea-Hwan vault gold
  • Perhaps 1 or 2 more guys…
I do think 4-member teams actually turned out good… But there’s a better way. I will post separately about that.

Cut rhythmic individuals and reallocate the spots to artistic. That gets you big teams and individuals. 😉 (teasing a little. I know we’ve had that discussion in another thread.)

If your idea can be easily understood, it is better. I remember a long thread on wwgym where people tried to decode the new system.

Not a super great reason. I just don’t understand it much so the judging feels really suspect, I think the leotards are even worse than US Nationals (when each club tries to out-bedazzle the other) and I cannot spell it on the first try. 🤷‍♀️ The team stuff is impressive and more interesting to me.
