I hope they will even put some pressure on the US. Especially in the future, post Simone (whenever that will be)

It’s really hard to say. Both China and Russia are historically pretty inconsistent. From about 2006 to 2012 one was always clearly better than the other, and so even with plenty of splatting the results matched that. China could have beaten Russia in 2010, but Russia were still clearly the better team on paper. Then from 2014 onwards, there hasn’t been a TF where one or both didn’t at least attempt to throw a medal away, and which one comes out on top has been determined by consistency.

Russia are going into it with the better recent history, having not lost to China since 2015 TFs (but a fairly stunning loss then) and had a fairly consistent quad, notwithstanding they weren’t amazing in Doha TFs. But it’s not really enough for most of us to trust them, I don’t think.

There’s also the issue that China have sometimes peaked too early in Olympic years in the past. I don’t know if the extra year will make a difference there. We should also consider that they seem to have a bit more strength in depth than Russia at this point. Russia are incredibly reliant on Melnikova, Listunova and Urazova.

Also, I refuse to watch that footage of Ou Yushan fucking up beam in prelims. I want the memory of her PT set to remain untainted by sorrow.

Tingting’s healys still look a little wonky. Looks like she’s struggling to fully push through her post arm, less alarming than in Stuttgart though. I wonder if she’s been dealing with shoulder issues.

Is there a reason she didn’t do BB here?

Ou Yushan will replace Guangdong teammate Wu Ran in tomorrow’s AA final.

The issue with her beam routine is that she either knocks it out of the park or she gets a 12.

She has no built in deductions. So any significant E Panel deductions are likely wobbles and falls, and thus, missed connections and no CV/SB.

Her routine is literally shit or bust.

Except, China should have had silver easily in 2019 and we saw what happens.
With stunning difficulty comes high risk…which sometimes risk does not always reap reward.

Giving her a +1 spot with zero international experience would be silly.

China would be better off giving that spot to a VT/FX specialist if they had another Cheng Fei type gymnast. The BB specialist getting 2-per’d by the main team wouldn’t be unusual given that CHN beam is a crapshoot. But they don’t really seem to have anyone serious EF contenders on VT/FX rn, so I guess it’s moot?

CHN should absolutely send Xinyi to worlds this year though. If she hits, nobody’s on par with her internationally.

Li’s vault from qual is here at 5:49. It is a bad DTY. The judges gave it an 8.6 and that’s where I had her too. Doug, are you interested in scoring and would you be able to make a spreadsheet?

Wei Xiaoyuan was a bit of a mess in TQ but she could be ideal for the +1 – good AA w strength on UB and BB… She could be on the team too if she competes well. With this Nationals, it’s clear China has perfected the secret score-weapon they’ve been practicing throughout the quad. Their always perfect alignment lends itself well to these directional leaps and jumps connected to backwards flips.

Yep 8.6.

On table I had 1 shoulder angle, 1 legs = 0.2

In post flight I had 1 legs, 1 body shape, 1 height, 1 distance, 3 pike down = 0.7

Landing i had 1 chest on landing, 1 feet apart on landing, 3 step = 0.5

Total 1.4, 8.6 E.

Would you like a spreadsheet for EFs? When are they happening?

Just saw Ou on beam in the AA.

@ArnoldRimmer - don’t watch. Not as bad as prelims but she fell on the side somi to straddle half and missed the switch half to korbut (though her korbut is GLORIOUS).

I LOVE her dismount. I don’t care what anyone else says 😝

Oh well, podium training replay it is. I assume she hasn’t made the EF, so that’s 0 for 2 in competition? The spirit of Yang Bo lives in this one. My new favourite.

Beam is looking downright triumphant and it was thrilling to see, whether it was PT (OYS) or the competition (LSJ). Along with alignment, another technique CHN seems to have mastered on beam is getting credit for nonrebounding/mixed combos through arm placement. They don’t pump their arms down and kill the “connection.” They keep them up and keep things moving.

Vault might be a little bit of a scramble, but who knows. People are coming back from injuries and there’s some, yet not much, time to go. Really liking some of the presentation on floor, like Lu Yufei and Deng Yalan.

I wouldn’t say strict scoring is intact, necessarily. LSJ and LTT’s E-scores on bars look way high to me.

Top 3 after today::
Lu Yufei, 56.932/56.765/113.697
Zhang Jin, 56.598/55.998/112.596
Li Shijia, 57.698/54.866/112.564

Ou Yushan had a better day, going 56.099 in the AA but combined with a bad day 1, that only put her 6th. Tang Xijing was 4th. Shang Chunsong 18th.

I think the fix is in for Li Shijia. A 54.8 with two falls, tumbling a double full and a two feet OOB? No way.

omg YASSSS.
STFU with your layouts non-critique. You probably would rather have her do a switch ring 1/2 and two wolf turns. 😇
