Rebeca Andrade exclusive: “I’m going to train for this Worlds”

Two-time Olympic artistic gymnastics gold medallist Rebeca Andrade has a clear 2025 goal in mind: October’s World Championships in Jakarta.

“I’m going to train for this Worlds, I hope everything goes well and I get good results. I’m not even talking about being on the podium,” Andrade told Olympics.com at the Laureus Awards in Madrid, Spain.

“Of course, we work for that to happen, but if it doesn’t, that’s okay. I want to arrive at the competition and be able to help the team, have everyone together. So, from a sporting perspective, the goal is Worlds.”

How that looks, Andrade says, is still taking shape, as she and coach Francisco Porath form their ultimate plan.

“I’m still not sure [about the events], my coach can answer better than I can, but we train everything… except floor,” she said.

While Andrade grabbed the floor exercise gold at the Olympic Games Paris 2024, she’s excelled most internationally on the vault, the event on which she owns gold from Tokyo 2020 and silver in Paris. She’s also the 2021 and 2023 world champion on the event.

Despite her Paris triumph, floor is the event that tests her knees the most. Andrade has returned to the sport after three ACL tears in 2015, 2017 and 2019 and says that training the event takes a great toll on her body.

The Brazilian superstar has also said a fourth trip to the Games when they head to Los Angeles in 2028 could be in the cards, and this week in Madrid, Andrade expressed interest in the newly announced mixed team event set to debut there.

“It’s going to be a very tough, very competitive event. I’m not sure if I’ll take part – we don’t know anything yet. It will depend a lot on what the team plans. But it’s interesting and I want to see it,” she said.

My best wishes for Rebeca Andrade at Worlds. She is the best gymnast that Brazil has ever produced. I truly hope she wins !

Andrade can easily beat many Americans in gymnastics. Brazil is a rising gymnastics super power. The USA had better watch out !

My best wishes for Rebeca Andrade. Rebeca, I support you and believe in you ! Go Rebeca !

I love the Rebeca Andrade / Simone Biles synergy and hope to see it again if the are both mentally and physically on-board
I would be very surprised to see Simone compete again. But I am very excited knowing Rebecca will be. I know some people are not crazy about one gymnast being so dominant. But to me that is hugely exciting.

Rebeca Andrade continues to chase greatness: “I'm not going to put a limit on my dreams"

By Scott Bregman, Sheila Vieira, and Lena Smirnova22 - April 2025

Two-time Olympic gold medalist Rebeca Andrade still has big dreams in artistic gymnastics.

“I’m not going to put a limit on my dreams, because I think that would be unfair after everything I’ve been through,” she told Olympics.com in an exclusive interview ahead of the Laureus Sport Awards, where she took home the Comeback of the Year win. “I have a lot of dreams and goals, but they might still be tucked away with me.

“What motivates me every day is knowing that it’s not just me who wants to be there, to achieve this goal, to have this dream – but my whole team,” Andrade continued. “Not just the girls, my coach, the staff, my family – who are my peace and also my team. So them believing in me, and us sharing the same goal, makes it all make sense for me to keep going.”

One of her first goals: the 2025 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia, set for October.

The training for that event is already well underway, says Andrade.

“I’m very calm, I’m not training hard [gymnastics elements] yet,” she explained. “The physiotherapy part is much more intense, and strength training too. But I’m still in the gym and we’re continuing to work, because you can’t stop.”

It’s a slightly more relaxed approach for the Brazilian star, who became her nation’s most decorated Olympian when she won four medals at the Olympic Games Paris 2024. She previously owned two medals from Tokyo 2020.

“It’s been very different. I’ve always had to train hard all the time, and now I can talk to my coach and say, ‘I need time for myself, I need to take care of my body and my mind,’ so that we can still have Rebeca in the future,” said Andrade, who is entering her fourth Olympic cycle.

It’s all part of a larger plan for an ambitious athlete who still has more to accomplish.

“It’s the desire to prove that I still have a bit more to show,” said Andrade.
