Donnell got one of the guaranteed spots because of placing 2nd at trials didn’t he? Or am I misremembering?
It was Nationals not Trials. Top 2 in the AA and top 3 on two events at Nationals auto-put you on the World Team. It was the difficulty bonus system that put Donnell in 2nd at Nationals and locked him onto the team.

Without the bonus system he would have placed 5th AA at Nationals. Colt Walker would have been 2nd. Brody still wins either way.

No it wasn’t, nobody else had individual medal potential and nobody else was likely to change the result of the team event.
Except he was limited to one event which didn’t pan out for either team medal or event final medal.
I doubt they go with a one event specialist next year.

Anyone have YouTube video link to event finals.
@Doug1233 keeps begging me to find him a link so he doesn’t have the results spoiled for him.

He missed the live coverage on Peacock earlier.

I’m looking for the others that don’t have spoilers in the title- will update. Watch in Olympic order in case they refer to previous results!

They never should have guaranteed the 2nd place person from Nationals a spot on the team, Whittenburg should have needed to compete at trials. Nobody should have been guaranteed, Brody should have competed at trials too. Nationals should just be a qualifying event and extra data point for selecting teams.

It’s unlikely to have “panned out” by taking anyone else in his place. You have to take the people who can actually win medals. Sometimes you will fall short, but you need to have a chance in the first place. Stephen’s qualifying score on Pommel shows he should be on the team. Especially if Russia gets back to competition. USA has no chance of a medal if they don’t take a team that can potentially put up a competitive number against Japan/China/Russia.

USA was also dumb to bench Donnell after he had that stupid fluke foot skid on vault. If you’ve got Don on your team, he vaults.

Dominique was a heartache for me because she always did better for the team than herself.

Maybe so. I read an interview where Denisse said it was named for her after she did it at the 1999 World championships.

Eta: videos I found of the event finals seem to have skipped her first vault.

The thing about Donnell’s vault is it only scores .1 higher than Brody’s at best, and the majority of the time Donnell scores worse or outright bombs it. He isn’t actually an asset to the team on vault, the bigger start value is a mirage.

I really doubt he will make teams going forward, unless he suddenly becomes super consistent on Floor or becomes much better High Bar worker.

I don’t know why Donell didn’t attempt the Ri Se-gwang as a second vault. He was out of vault finals anyway, so he could do the vault to get it on the podium for potential TF.

I am not opposed to the bonus system for some things–I could see using it to help determine funded spots, so they can experiment more and get more competition experience with higher difficulty. But not for shots on a team where they won’t be scored with the bonus.

It was named for her. Just like the 1 1/2 twisting Yurchenko was named after Shushunova.

On bars I had Shilese in gold and a tie for silver between Wei and Derwael.

I thought Wei was really overscored. Her feet and knees on every skill. All her turns are late. And her transitions are anaemic when compared to Shilese. Shilese really showcased her lovely handstands today. I gave her an 8.5E.
