I’ll be That Person and say Gelya’s Cheng isn’t happening (or shouldn’t, at least), just like how all the random US ones weren’t happening. She’s still more upside down than not by the time her head is below the table.

Speculation at this point still, but did they swap Akhaimova and Gerasimova’s spots?

Has she actually competed the Cheng before? IIRC she crashed one spectacularly during podium training in Doha/Stuttgart, though I can’t find any footage.

In my mind, it’s gonna go about as well as Khorkina’s DTY in Athens prelims.

What has ever stopped Mother Russia from unveiling a skanky vault upgrade at the last minute?

Imagine the team relying on that vault to anchor the final rotation in TF trying to stave off Japan for bronze after they fall four times? It will be riveting.

At 3:04 is a Cheng in the gym training from Melnikova from at least as early as March 2020 (when the vid was uploaded). If it looks better than that now, then maybe we’ll see it in competition!

I have a vague memory of Melnikova doing that^, but maybe I’m confusing her w Simakova or Akhaimova who have crashed their “Rudis”.

Another pic of Akhaimova in team leo and Gerasimova +1? Is this a go, especially considering the MAG shakeup?

I didn’t know Russia can still make these swaps though. Maybe I’m misinterpreting the rules?

Yeah, the Russian men are still trying to win, but I don’t know the last time Denis hit a floor routine, and he has to do floor.

Gelya showed a Cheng in her Instagram stories today. I don’t know how to share a link to a story. Maybe this will work :crossed_fingers:.

I believe teams don’t have to be confirmed until the day before qualification?

That Cheng looks great. If she hits, she’ll probably win an AA medal with this upgrade.

So if they’re using Akhaimova on the main team, hopefully that means her name was submitted on July 5. Surely an official in Tokyo would notify them they’d surrender the +1 if they attempt to make a switch.

If Russia were to lose the NOC +1, it would be reallocated to France (likely Coline Devillard, but perhaps it’s too late for her to join the team in Tokyo?? Idk her status)

Devillard is the alternate for France so will be in Tokyo.

That said, if Russia tries to change to Akhaimova, if she isn’t listed on the main team, they will probably just swap Geraminisova with her again. However, from what I remember, RUS had not decided who was who previous so chances are Akhaimova’s name was given for the 4 member team.

After Day 1 of Russian Cup, ValRod provisionally named Gerasimova to the team.

I’d like to think Russia wouldn’t “donate” a plus one on each side, but we’ll see if they figure out the rules.

Angelina’s biggest issue is going to be the prelims. With Russia finishing on beam, she won’t know if she’ll need the Cheng to advance, and she most likely can’t afford a stupid fall if she wants to make AA. I wish Russia could send all three for the AA finals.
