This afternoon!Did they say it would be announced today on social media or just that it would be on social media?
I should say, zero surprises after yesterday's!Zero surprises.
Skye Blakely
Dulcy Caylor
Joscelyn Roberson
Leanne Wong
Non-Traveling Replacement Athletes: Jayla Hang & Ashlee Sullivan
Yes. Why they couldn't find a better facility for this year's trials anyway?I'm hoping that not vaulting onto a mushy pit facing a wall will help them all improve their vaults at worlds
And that the new training center they are building near Indianapolis will never have people vaulting right at a wall
I am wondering is today events were chosen to help to decide (though the final decision will be made after PT in Jakarta for sure) who would do AA, Caylor or Roberson? Roberson posted higher score on beam yesterday, but today Caylor beat her (though still staying 0.05 behind Roberson's yesterday BB score). And Caylor also posted the third highest UB score yesterday, behind Sullivan and Hang. With Wong going 2nd at Nationals and 2nd at Trials, she deserves to be an AAer.
The question is Roberson or Caylor. Roberson finished 3rd at both Nationals and Trials, so there is argument to that.
But Caylor did win Trials so there is argument for that as well.
I do think it will be Caylor and Wong for AA. With Roberson and Blakely splitting. Roberson is unlikely to medal in the AA, but has a high probability to win a medal on both vault and floor so it makese sense to specialize.
My kids went to a small gym in suburban Missouri years ago, and now I am wondering if we met there @RichardLThe facility was really laughable. The gym where I coached years ago in suburban Missouri would have been a better choice. But I'm glad no one got injured during the selection process.
If you were in the western STL suburbs, then it's certainly possible! I worked at All Star and then at GymQuarters! My kids went to a small gym in suburban Missouri years ago, and now I am wondering if we met there @RichardL
Because that was exactly my thought. That gym where we went was so small that they barely fit all the equipment there, and the vault was a safety hazard even for compulsory kids. Watching the trial routines brought all these old memories back.
Most countries will try to send their best. Italy is not doing that this year, they are prioritizing depth of the team and keeping their top athletes healthy. Alice D'Amato and Manila Esposito would be in contention for world medals this year but are being rested by the head coach.I know that selection camp is intense for the US because it comes with the given that we have to send the best. Most countries must be the same, or is it? I hear differently.
The top countries use the tried and true while being fair to the athletes. And that is why they medal and stay at the top. I imagine there are countries that succumb to political pressure and do not send the deserving athletes. And these are the countries that no matter how much talent they have will take a while to be medalists and lead the world in gymnastics. We all know which countries these are. Most countries will try to send their best. Italy is not doing that this year, they are prioritizing depth of the team and keeping their top athletes healthy. Alice D'Amato and Manila Esposito would be in contention for world medals this year but are being rested by the head coach.
China is taking a different approach and sending true specialists to Worlds due to the individual format, so they are prioritizing medal chances.
USA is also doing the same approach, with Caylor locked in due to selection criteria, she auto qualified herself by winning Trials AA. Caylor likely would not have been selected had she not won the AA.
Russia is sending athletes that were cleared to be AIN, but also medal hopefuls.
