Season 4 with Shawn Johnson and husband Andrew East - Episode 2

We begin with everyone waking up in the bunk. Shawn and Andrew have cots next to each other. It shows them holding hands upon waking. Andrew says "Just remember the good news is, today is not yesterday." They share a quick smooch walking out of the room.

Everyone gets dressed and they're called to line up outside with their packs on. They get in SUVs and are driven to the first challenge. They are told to climb up the face of a 250ft. dam. There's staircases so this is just them all running up a lot of stairs with their big backpacks on.

1st Challenge: They are going to be sitting in pairs of two inside of an open backed husk of a small airplane that they get inside at the top of the dam. It will then be lowered with ropes down into the water. The plane will be submerged (just under the surface, not deep) for 20 seconds. They have to hold their breath for that time. After 20 seconds they will receive a signal (a staff member reaching in the window and squeezing their arm) from outside the vessel and are supposed to swim out to exit through the rear side door (not the open back of the plane.) They have medical personnel on a raft in the water nearby.

The very first pair are Jussie Smollett and Eva Marcille. They sit for the 20 seconds, they both swim out, Eva through the correct door, Jussie through the back, and their heads are up out of the water outside the plane. Then Eva just.. passes out and starts to sink. The medical team swims out and pulls her onto their raft. She wakes up on the raft and is physically fine but rattled. They fail because Jussie swam out the wrong exit. A bunch of other pairs fail for panicking before the 20 seconds are up and swimming out early. There's an uneven number of contestants so Jussie volunteers to go again when it's Christie Pearce Rampone's turn. He swims out the wrong exit again lol so they fail as well.

Shawn and Andrew are paired up. They're sitting under the water calmly. They cut away to Shawn saying "I always strive to be perfect. So obsessed with the idea. Nothing is going to change that. " They receive the 20 second signal, they both swim out the correct exit, and pass. Staff compliment their composure. Only one or two other pairs besides them passed.

They get back into the SUVs and head back to base camp. They kill some time talking and staff doing one-on-one conversations. After that's over they're all called out for the 2nd challenge. They are driven to what is called a "fortress" in an old empty village. It's just kind of an open outdoor courtyard. They are going to do milling/military boxing.

Shawn is called up first to fight against Brianna LaPaglia. Cut to Andrew saying "Seeing Shawn fight, I'll probably be more nervous than she is. But she is stone cold. I mean she stands up to pressure situations like nobody I've ever seen." The fight begins: Brianna is a head taller than Shawn so Shawn is whaling away at her torso. Brianna is kinda waving around not really aiming well but manages to land a shot to Shawn's head (they have boxing helmets and gloves on) and Shawn is bleeding. The fight is stopped and Shawn is sent to medical. For extra drama they keep showing a shot of her bloody mouthguard on the ground, then show Shawn holding her nose with blood running down her face. Medical clears her as being okay, just a bloody nose. Staff calls their fight a draw. Shawn is standing there still bloody like an angry little statue.

Brianna is crying because she says she hates violence and fighting (Shawn appeared to have no such qualms and if she were taller may have taken Brianna's head off.) Eva starts having a panic attack from watching Shawn and Brianna's fight and goes to see the psychologist, they let her sit out the boxing challenge. When it's Gia Giudice's turn to fight, Teresa Giudice instantly says quits because she says she can't watch her daughter fight. Gia does fine against Christie. They just flashed by Andrew's fight real quick, I don't even know who he was fighting. The rest of the fights were unremarkable.

Back at base camp, Eva is still worked up. The staff decide that it's unsafe for her to continue, so they ask for her armband and withdraw her. She gathers her belongings, says goodbye, and with that the episode ends. We're 3 down with 15 contestants left going into day three. Doing better than last season when multiple people had been injured out by this point.

Season 4 with Shawn Johnson and husband Andrew East - Episode 3

It's day three. Lights on and everyone wakes up at 6am. Staff says "Today we will be moving into an urban warfare environment. Fighting in built up areas is the worst case scenario. It's what we have done for the past two or three decades. Bullets are flying everywhere, people are dying, you need to keep your cool." then they are in the cars being driven to the challenge location.

They're brought to an ancient abandoned town/city area that's completely empty except for the walls of the buildings and rocks strewn around. The challenge is a casualty evacuation task. Operating in 3-man teams, they will go deep into "enemy territory," locate their fallen comrades, and bring them to an extraction point.

Groups go one at a time. First is Nick Young, Randall Cobb, and Jesse James Decker. The "fallen comrades" are just like extra actors, it's not other contestants. The first guy they find is too pretend injured to walk so they carry him on a stretcher. The 2nd guy they find can walk but with their assistance. There's bangs and smoke going off around them from the props they've hidden in piles of rocks along the way. They keep dropping the stretcher. Nick says he wants to quit and starts to walk off, but pulls it together and they finish. They fail for dropping the stretcher too many times and for Nick trying to quit half way through.

Shawn, Andrew, and Chanel Iman are next. Shawn and Chanel get startled by one of the fake bangs, Chanel trips, and they drop their end of the stretcher. They cut to Andrew in a talking head saying "I wanna show that I have other strengths beyond just football prowess. I like to step up and I can make good decisions. In my mind it's like, it's like game on!" Chanel drops the stretcher again and Shawn yells at her to use two hands. She says it's too heavy so Andrew says lets drop our packs. They abandon their backpacks and continue on. They find their 2nd guy and make it to the extract point. They fail as a team for leaving their packs behind.

Gia Giudice, Johnny Manziel, and Mark Estes group completely miss the 2nd guy, they didn't see him at all, just carry out the stretcher guy, so they fail.

Eric Decker, Jussie Smollett, and Ravi Patel's group drop the poor stretcher actor on his head a bunch of times lol, they fail.

Christie Pierce Rampone, Kody Brown, and Brianna LaPaglia are the last group. They get the first guy on the stretcher and are making quick progress. Kody keeps yelling commands at the two women. When the girls tell him to stop because they see the 2nd guy they're supposed to rescue, Kody steamrolls over them and says we can't keep stopping and pulls them along with the stretcher. They fail for abandoning the 2nd guy.

They go back to the camp and have lunch. Staff have a one-on-one with Brianna. Jussie has been coughing a lot and it's getting worse, he goes to see the medic. He says "You've got inflammation right throughout your chest." The doctor goes out and tells the staff that Jussie has developed an allergy to something in the dust, but his chest sounds horrendous. He is medically withdrawn from the show.

Driving to the next task. This time they're in a modern empty town. They will work in the same groups. They have to infiltrate a building by stealth and run up to the roof. There is a wobbly metal ladder going from their roof over to the roof of an adjacent building. They have to walk across it like it's a four story high balance beam. They have helmets on and are attached to a safety harness connected to ropes way up above the ladder, so no one is in real danger if they fall off.

To pass they have to make it across the ladder without touching it with their hands or losing their footing. Christie Pierce Rampone goes too fast, trips, and falls (dangles in the air on her harness.) Nick Young panics and freezes in the middle. Then he crawls across the rest of the ladder. Everyone else passes easily. They didn't even show Shawn or Andrew doing it.

They drive back to camp. They have a one-on-one with Nick and that's the end of the episode. I have no idea what the passes or fails even matter for in this show. Other than the first episode where the losing team had to jog back to camp, absolutely nothing happens if you pass or if you fail. You just continue on either way. 4 down, 14 people left.

Season 4 - Shawn Johnson & Andrew East - Episode 4

This is long because we get lots of Shawn and Andrew this episode. Well, a lot of Andrew.

Day four, it's 6am and everyone is waking up. Shawn and Andrew are laying in their cots, Andrew turns to Shawn and asks if she's okay. She just looks at him and doesn't answer.

Called outside to line up. Staff tells them today they'll be working on their mindsets, the challenge will be inducing panic and fear to see how they deal with it. Cut to everyone in the cars being driven to the challenge location and we get a conversation between Kody Brown and Andrew (Shawn is not in the car.)

Kody: Your experience at football was as a long snapper so it wasn't like you were getting lots of glory.

Andrew: No. I was a linebacker, and then they made me a long snapper, and then I lost it. Then I get married to Shawn and it's like 'No one cares about Andrew.' So it's like my ego has never had a chance to shine.

Kody laughing: You can come home and do dishes Andrew!

Andrew laughs: Well no no no, it's always like "Hey you're Shawn's husband right?

Cut away to Andrew talking to the camera saying "Preparing for the course, I have seen a new side of my wife. She is like locked in in a way I have never seen. It's really cool to see and also a little intimidating."

Challenge 1: They're taken to a new giant dam that is one of the biggest in the world. They have to rappel off of it and descend down 300 feet. Staff performs a demonstration of the challenge. Tells them you have to control your fear and your descent. They're going to take turns going one by one. They will be told a set of coordinates at the top. They have to recite the coordinates to staff at the bottom.

Andrew: My knees are about to be trembling.
Shawn: Better not.
Andrew: What?
Shawn: Better not. Breathe.

Nick Young goes first. He freaks out a little bit but makes it safely down. He forgets the code when he gets to the bottom so it's a fail. Ravi V. Patel is second. He messes up a bit at the top, but then goes down fine and remembers the correct code. Pass.

They show a montage of a bunch of people doing it at once. Chanel Iman forgets the code, fail. Brianna LaPaglia keeps saying she's terrified but then does it fine and passes. One of the NFL guys passes, I can't remember which one is which.

Shawn to camera: "I sacrificed everything in my life for my sport. Andrew has never seen my competitive side. I don't know what happens when that side of me comes back out."

She does it perfectly, calmly recites the code, and passes. Andrew at the top says to Kody "She's such a boss dude! Brigadier General Shawn!" and salutes at her down at the bottom.

When she's back at the top he tells her "You were like.. perfect form out there! Thanks for showing me the way. ..Why do my knees feel weak? I don't hear you talk about your weak knees, why do my knees feel all weak?" she just shakes her head and shrugs at him.

Andrew's turn, he is last to go.

Staff asks: Are you scared of heights?"

Andrew: Who's not scared of 300 feet??

Staff: What's going on anyway? You're f***ing always following in your wife's footsteps, aren't you?

Andrew: She likes to set the bar, yeah.

Staff: Does she?

Andrew: If I went first the bar would be way too low.

Staff: Is she better than you at stuff?

Andrew: Almost everything, yeah.

Staff: Do you feel inferior to her?

Andrew: No, no, we're a good team. We're a good team.

Cut to Andrew talking to the camera: "My football career didn't pan out like I wanted it to. There was a lot of shame. Shawn saw me at rock bottom. So I would like to show her I can be the guy who steps up to the plate."

He hesitates before going, has to be told five times to go. Staff scream at him to look over his shoulder to watch where he's going. They show Shawn watching him and sighing. Andrew doesn't remember the code at the bottom and fails. Staff tells him "You are now on our radar. Do better."

He's back at the top talking to Shawn.

Andrew: I didn't get the code right! I'm pissed! I guess I did many things wrong. Dang.

Shawn: It's okay. It's our chance to tighten up.

Andrew: Who needs tightening on your side??

Five people failed the challenge. Back at the camp now. Staff are more focused on Ravi than Andrew atm because he doesn't know when to stop talking, so they have a one on one. Then it's off to the second challenge.

(continued below)

Challenge 2: They will be navigating through half a mile of claustrophobic underground tunnels to a signal tower. They're split into four teams, each team has a leader chosen by staff. Kody Brown, Randall Cobb, Johnny Manziel, and Andrew are the leaders. The leader will carry a grenade. When they get to the signal tower, they use the grenade to destroy it.

First team is Johnny Manziel, Chanel Iman, and Gia Giudice. When they get to the tunnels Gia immediately starts panicking and doesn't want to go in. Staff tells her if she doesn't get in there she will have to withdraw, so in she goes. The tunnels are so tight Johnny has to dig a little to get out of the first one. 2nd tunnel ends in a water pit, they have to turn on their backs and pull themselves through using open grating above them. Here's a pic, it's hard to describe:

tunnel.webp

3rd tunnel ends in a dead end and the leader has to find a new way out. Johnny gets stuck and starts screaming I'm stuck! over and over. The other two back out of the tunnel so he can back up. He comes up through some trap door instead and says "I'm out." Staff tell him to take a minute and think about it because he's almost to the end but he just says "I'm out, I'm out" and takes off his armband. Johnny quits the show so the team fails.

Quick montage of the two Not-Andrew teams going through. Shawn is with Kody Brown and Nick Young. She's trying to motivate Nick to keep going. Shawn gets stuck and Nick drags her back out. They're really just flashing through this. They show both teams throwing their grenade at the signal tower. Both teams pass.

Andrew's team is himself, Jessie James Decker, Mark Estes, and Eric Decker.

Andrew to the camera: "I would say that I can step up and be a leader. A lot of times, I just ..don't. I have pretty low expecations for myself and how I'll do in those situations. I like being around competition.. rather than winning the competition. I just wanna help other people give their best."

Andrew gets them successfully through the first and second tunnels. He gets to the part where Johnny got stuck and looks at it. Then he tells everyone to back up. They back up out of the tunnel and just run over to the signal tower and throw the grenade. Staff yells pass. Now I'm really confused as to what the point of the 3rd tunnel was. There was no other way out? You just crawl in, back back out, and run to the tower? Why.. go in there in the first place then..?

Anyway, Andrew's teammates are patting him on the back and saying good job, great leadership, good job. Everyone is exhausted. Shawn walks up to Andrew and hugs him. Andrew says "It's good to see you. Breathe. Breathe. Breathe. Good job." Back in the cars to drive back to camp.

Staff are talking about who they're going to bring in for another one on one. This is where staff brings someone into their "office" to talk about something emotional from their past. Staff are usually nice in these. They call Andrew in "over concerns about his mental attitude."

Staff: How are you feeling?

Andrew: It's been a roller coaster. Uh..

Staff: But today was a good day, wasn't it?

Andrew: I didn't get the code right on the rappel. That was dissappointing.

Staff: But then this afternoon, which was a really physical and team leading challenge...

Andrew: The team did great. Team did great.

Staff: You led it, in my eyes.

Andrew: I mean, I was close to a panic, but the team did great.

Staff: Your team that You were the leader of, did the best out of all the teams that went through it. I didn't expect you to have a party, but you need to take credit where it's due.

Andrew: (slow nodding)

Staff: Are you always so self critical of things you do?

Andrew: Uh.. I like to consider myself a dependable guy. There's really only been one situation where.. I got totally out of whack. And.. my rookie year in the NFL, I was a long snapper. So I'm, like, the top dog in my position. Again, it's kind of about reliability, being dependable, and you go out there for punts and field goals. You just have to execute consistently. And my first team in the NFL, I sat down with the special teams coach, and he says, 'East, you're the guy, just don't lose it.' In a three month period, I just- I started doing things I'd never done before. It's almost like-

Staff: You were screwing up.

Andrew: I started ruminating on things. And I like, I lost it. I just didn't trust myself. Um.. just cause I, frankly, was not that good. ..You know it like.. hurts. And I've kind of just been searching for like, what the heck was that?

Staff: Do you feel like you've been a bit of a failure there?

Andrew: 100%. I definitely underperformed expectations in my football career and had not dove into something like this since that.

Staff: Because you're scared?

Andrew: Yeah.

Staff: It seems to me.. you are Mr. Self-Doubt.

Andrew: I've struggled with that.. I mean it's like- yeah.

Staff: I feel like overthinking is your worst enemy.

Andrew: I agree.

Staff: You've got potential, so much potential. Just do something with it. Don't overthink it. Learn to be in a state where you don't care if you fail. You're just gonna do. Be here for you. That's an important thing.

Andrew: Yes, sir.

Andrew is then sent back to the camp. We get a cut of him talking to the camera: "My biggest fear in selection is finding a blind spot that really cripples me. But letting fear cripple you or hold you back is not a good route through life. So I would like the chance to, I guess, fight that dragon, conquer it, and prove to myself that I can perform in these high-stress situations."

In the bunk, Shawn is sitting on Andrew's lap on a cot with their heads together.

Shawn: You good?
Andrew: I'm good.
Shawn: Body good?
Andrew: Body's good. .. You're a beast.
Shawn: So are you.

And with that the episode finally ends. 5 down, 13 people left.
