sad but probably a good call. Her coach seems on top of things so I am guessing they basically got pre-approval to petition to trials.

Certainly opens up the opportunity for someone else to finish on the AA podium.

Shilese is a lock for Paris. Smart decision by her.

Memmel and Sacramone were also locks in 2008 but were forced to compete and they were both in Beijing with injuries. I think they can relate to Shilese.

What happens if Shilese is injured for Olympic Trials (shoulder or unexpected injury). Can she make the Olympic Team?

No. The only way you can petition directly onto the Olympic Team is if you finish 1st or 2nd at US Nationals this weekend and then those scores hold up to be 1st or 2nd at Trials. That petition would have to be an illness petition, no injury petitions to the team will be accepted.

She has to compete at Olympic Trials to be chosen for Paris.

Sad, but a bit of a relief. But please please PLEASE be okay by Trials!

At least, Olympic Trials aren't for four weeks. You don't get much downtime between U.S. Classic and Nationals in an Olympic year.
