** Denotes regional host*

The top two teams from each regional will receive an automatic berth to the national championships. In addition, the top all-around competitor and top event specialist from round two at each regional (who is not on a team advancing to nationals) will advance to the national championships. Event specialist qualifiers will only compete in the events they qualified.;
Download and print your bracket here: https://www.ncaa.com/_flysystem/public-s3/files/2023_WGYM_Bracket_Finals.pdf

NOTE: The individuals listed above also include individuals from play in teams, when one team does not advance, those individuals listed will compete in the regional semi-finals for a chance to make nationals as an individual. So if Arizona is eliminated the Arizona gymnasts who have NQS to qualify as an individual will continue the next day, either in AA or individual event.

We won’t know who qualifies to nationals as individuals because it is the top AA, and one on each event, from teams that do not qualify. So you could be leading that event after day 2 but after the regional final, you are out because now a team did not qualify.

Like in 2019 when Florida fell apart at regionals and Denver and Oregon State passed Florida.
Florida then swept the individual competitors due to their dominating performance in regional semi-finals.
Boren qualified for the AA
Thomas qualified for UB and FX
Baumann qualified for BB
Schoenherr qualified for VT

I hate this new nationals format for this reason.

I could see Denver making it to nationals or getting bumped out of finals by Minnesota. That seems like the toughest final along with LA. I think at the end of a long season they have a bit of advantage being habituated to the altitude in Denver, I can see endurance being a potential issue in that regional.

Pittsburgh should be the most straightforward I think. I’m excited to see Trinity live before she retires. Sad to not have individuals from LIU and UNC there but very glad to have Cal and MSU.

My wildest prediction is UGA knocking Oregon St out in the semis. Elsewhere, Oklahoma night session has the biggest chance for an upset imo. Auburn is lucky to draw SUU and UW instead of Stanford. They’ll have more room to be average in that semi I think.

I enjoyed Bama at SECs after being put off by their homescoring all season. I’m looking forward to them vs UK.

That’s not quite how it works unless it has changed? If you are leading the event after day 2 (as in top score), you’re going to win that event no matter what happens after that. I don’t think the final score count towards event or AA winners. At least this method means any event specialist from each event qualifies. It used to be that you had to outright win the event and have a certain score or above. Now it’s the top score from a non-qualifying team.

You can be in the lead on that event after day 2 because the other teams are in the final…but then a team does not qualify and boom you are out because a team expected to go gets bumped and now someone who scored higher than you is in.

That is what happened in 2019 with Florida. Multiple athletes were assumed to be going to nationals because no one was ahead of them other than Florida, then Florida had a disaster and was shockingly out.

It’s like the play in teams. Individual qualifiers can come from a team eliminated, but also individual qualifiers can be checked off due to the team qualifying forward.

You can be the expected top qualifier after day two and not make it because of an upset, but if you are the top score (the event winner), it doesn’t matter what teams qualified or don’t because the event winner goes. The event winner doesn’t change based on who qualifies as a team. The event qualifier does.
In the Florida example, Trinity was going for bars and floor whether or not Florida qualified as she won those events. If Florida qualified it would have gone to the next highest.

In the past, if Florida had qualified, no one would have gone as an individual because a qualifying team member won all the individual events. Now, at least if that happens, the next highest goes, which means more individual gymnast get to go to nationals. (To be clear, I’m still not sure I’m sold on the “four on the floor” rather than the six, but I do like taking the highest qualifier from a non-advancing team for each event)

Sorry that my original post was unclear and confused you.

The point is we don’t know who goes as individuals until after the final day, where as in the past individuals knew right away because it was always the top 2 teams advancing and then whoever was highest ranked in the all around and events was taken to nationals.

I shouldn’t have used “winner”…as technically you could be 13th ranked on an event and go to nationals, so long as the 12 ahead of you are from the two advancing teams.

But also, you could have technically won the event but not get to to nationals, if you happened to be a co-winner, it goes into tie-break procedures.
IIRC, we haven’t had that situation happen with the new format, but this is just the 4th year using the system.

I also agree with your last statement and believe nationals should be a bigger event with 16 teams qualifying from regionals to nationals. This would allow far more specialists and all-arounders from non power schools to qualify as individuals.

I would have it be one day of regionals with 2 teams qualifying to nationals from semi-finals. Then have a national semi-final round of 4 quad meets with the winner of each quad meet going to finals. It is like for finals and then THE final.

I just think that there are so many contenders these days that it sucks to go down to just 8 teams.
It is going to to be devastating that two of UCLA, Utah, Auburn, and Missouri don’t make nationals. Same with Florida, ASU, MSU, and Cal.
On any given day Cal and MSU could be contenders for the national title. Cal specifically can challenge the top group and MSU beat Michigan head to head (with UM errors).

Any tips for watching this outside the US?
There aren’t any. It is being streamed by ESPN+ so you need to have the app in order to watch.

PAC 12 International YouTube might have the UCLA regional, but I doubt it since ESPN owns the rights to regionals.

Hopefully #1GymFan on YouTube will upload.

If I access via a UK VPN, this is the subscription option I get. £9.99, cancel after one month seems a good deal to Watch regionals

Yeah she is my only hope 🙏 this sucks
Mine too.
I am sure it’ll all be posted to YouTube. I won’t have the time the next few days and this weekend to watch so I’ll check live results and then YouTube after…still trying to finish up with conference meets!

I’m not 100% sure I’m right on this, but as far as I know, ESPN+ is only available in the US. Most countries have access to ESPN Player, but that won’t be showing regionals. A couple people on Reddit bought ESPN Player only to realize this afterwards.
