Hopefully it won't be super crazy, since it is conference championships, there are more judges so that will help, hopefully.

Looking forward to see who the first ever Mountain West champion will be and the second ever ACC champion will be. Will NC State defend their title 40 years later?

Am I the only one who finds conference championships in NCAA gymnastics weird? It's just whoever wins on this one day, no reflection of performances over a season. How can a team which has lost every meet up to this point still be deemed champions?

That's why they award regular season conference championships.

It's no different than national championships. The winner is whoever is best on a specific day. Doesn't matter if Oklahoma puts up the best NQS in history, easily wins regional competitions and first day of nationals--if they falter on championship day, they're not champions.

To be in with a chance of the national championship you first have to qualify for regionals, then get through two rounds at regionals and another at nationals to be in the final. That's how most sports with play offs work. The conference championships just forget that the rest of the season happened.

All sports do conference championships.

In gymnastics over half the teams are eliminated after conference championships, it is their last meet as a full team. For fair share of individuals, this is also their final meet if they don't qualify to regionals as individuals.

None of the EAGL teams made it to regionals, (GWU is at 38 still in the hunt), so conference championships is also a bragging right for one of those 5 teams.

Conference championships for some teams ARE their post-season, because that is that for them.

Towson is EAGL, they're locked into a regional spot.

Conference tournaments/championships are held for 2 reasons 1. Money generator for the conference, especially when it comes to football and basketball and 2. Some marginal benefit to the conference teams to help improve post-season chances. In the case of football, money really overrides everything, but the other sports like baseball and basketball, etc, strong performance in a conference championship can help with seeding, etc. Which makes the B10 and B12 a real head scratcher, having the a school host and lose the opportunity to improve seeding. I guess those conferences cannot generate the revenue if it was in a neutral location?

For the race for the last spot, #37 Iowa (current NQS 196.305) competes first tomorrow. They must score 196.250 to even have a chance. They have the lowest max NQS at 196.385 of the three bubble teams.

Second up is #38 GW (current NQS 196.145), with a max NQS of 196.470. Anything less than 196.475 and GW is eliminated. If Iowa maxes out, they need a 196.775 to move ahead of Iowa and stay alive.

#36 Iowa State (current NQS 196.325) is the last to compete and will know what score they need to make regionals. Depending how the other two do, Iowa State could have their spot secured before even taking the floor. 196.700 will clinch the spot even if GW maxes out their NQS. If GW finishes they day behind Iowa, and Iowa maxes their NQS, a 196.375 will eliminate Iowa.

This is Iowa State's to lose. Iowa's scores are so close together they can't make much of a move in NQS. GW has a 195.575 to drop and they've finally put it all together at the right time--but the minimum 196.475 they need to stay alive would be their second highest road score all year. For a 196.775 that would be needed if Iowa achieves max NQS, it would be their second highest score this season, period. The only reason to even entertain the possibility that they might get the score they need is GW scored their season high of 197.2 on the road at Towson.....which is hosting EGAL championships.

OK....
I am going to make my predictions!
Anyone else can play! Also, will try to watch as much as possible. It is a rainy Saturday here and nothing planned for the day. So I will be in the living room all day and don't feel guilty. (Hubby already gave me the go ahead and bought three books yesterday so all good!)

Apparently Naomi Morrison is going to compete today through injury?

If so that will help Michigan substantially. Just depends on her condition and how many events.

It was really over before conference championships. Iowa State just too hard to catch.

Sorry, but Iowa needs new leotards that fit properly, every single one of the gymnasts have thongs by the end of their routines. Not body shaming, but its a huge distraction.
