I remember that there was a lot of focus on developing inbars while Liukin was responsible for the juniors while the rest of the world had alteady understood that flight combinations was the way to go. So…

To be fair, some teams really have made excellent use of inbars for D-score building. Though I do feel that bars development should focus on multiple aspects, and play to each gymnast’s strengths. There’s no one right way to do it, but there are certainly a lot of wrong ways. I’ve also felt concern that gymnasts are arriving on the elite level without the ability to do basic elite skills soundly, but part of that may have to do with the JO system just not requiring that difficulty, as well. Ideally we’d see gymnasts arrive on the elite scene with both clean form and the building blocks of solid difficulty… it often feels like we’re missing a bit of each in the US unless a gymnast is a standout bars worker.

I agree that there are multiple ways to go on bars development, but the US as a whole avoided an entire avenue that could be explored with the inbars with very few exceptions. So it could have been a nice element to explore when the athletes were younger to see who could progress with them.

I’ve seen some lower level Russian bars compulsories if you will, and they practice that orphan half turn that they all do at the upper level. Do I loathe the element? Of course, but if they’re all going to do it… make it look good. (They need a new way to get down to the low bar)

Like you said there seems to be something missing by the time they get to the upper levels. I understand not everyone is going to be super flexible to do some of the elements, but the code will continue to adjust to bring these release moves down in value and athletes will need to learn other skills. And solid basics in a variety elements would help.
