Maybe by “elite” they mean internationally. I forget if Lisa made it past British/English Champs.
well they need to be more precise with their wording then! However making a big thing of it annoys me. There are plenty of mums on the international scene. Chuso anyone? Musty? Marta Pihan? Just make it a normal thing.

It's like reporters haven't moved on from gymnasts being 14-year olds ... like all of that stuff about Simone being "old" in 2024

In fairness, the shift towards WAG gymnasts lasting into their late 20s and beyond is a pretty big shift and a recent one. It does take time for people to adjust to a change like that in a sport. And Chuso is hardly the norm -- nor will she ever be.

It seems like people competing in the mid-late 20s and even medalling has been around for a decade at least, in Europe, although perhaps not in the US. Tweddle, Wevers, Ferrari, Ponor etc

Although I agree that Chuso is unique

At a certain age a decade is a short period of time to get used to changes. . . .and also you are correct -- its much less than that in the U.S. To me it feels very very recent.

I think the situation in the US made it harder to achieve longevity - whether to make money with post-Olympic commercial ventures that, until recently, ruled out college scholarships and actually having the educational opportunities from NCAA as an alternative, but that wasn't encouraged during the Karolyi regime.

The US are a weird one because they were early adopters of the 20 something trend. Dawes was a 23 year old third time Olympian in Sydney, then they had two who were closer to their 30th than 20th birthdays in 04. That still just about qualified as radical 20 years ago..But then they went the other way again.
