Not every team needs a name. It’s so forced.
Agreed! Though I think Final Five was probably the worst, in hindsight, since it seemed to glorify Marta. Though maybe it was an inside joke? "We're the LAST people Marta will ever mess up with her death camps and mind games! Hooray!"

The team name has spread. Italy has named themselves the Fairy Five.
What the hell?

Someone on Reddit a few years ago made a list of greatest beam workers ever, and it was all Americans and included Aly, she of the "my close to the beam work is literally just leaning over it" and Shawn. They didn't like my response, which was telling them to go watch Lysenko or Yang Bo and report back to us.

Almost as bad as the uninformed shit is the crazy politics. I don’t even know if it's left or right (probly left, cuz Reddit) but it's psycho just the same. Plenty of posters thought that it was A-ok to put sardines in Alexis Jeffrey's gymbag because "she's racist so it's fair to bully her." And when I stated my discomfort with the idea of banning Russian athletes from international competitions because "countries invade each other sometimes--it can be justified or not but I don't think it should play a role in sports," people FREAKED THE FUCK OUT.

I think so but it was more so because they were the final team selection made by Marta before her retirement.

"crazy politics" lol wow

I do answer good faith questions regarding the Russia-Belarus suspension on sports subs. But the subject always results in a litany of pro-Putin and antisemitic comments. And random users who've never posted on sports subs before come in droves to push propaganda. So I understand why many users get pissy at anyone questioning the ban.

Doctors have to be blunt because people will tightly grasp the most minute glimmer of hope and then act like the doctor made false promises when that hope doesn't pan out. I'm sure her nephrologists are quite happy to be wrong as opposed to having given a maybe and she wasn't able to return to elite sport.

Over here thinking about how I was told I would never be able to do gymnastics again because of some medical conditions that cause a lot of problems in my life. I really wish the doctors had been wrong and that I could even still do the sport for fun, but imagine if they had told me I would be able to keep going and training, and then we ended up where we are now. I would be devastated. As said above, false hope is terrible. False hope ruins things (I know this from experience sadly). Obviously, I can still do cartwheels and pullovers, but flipping and twisting and etc is no more. If Suni had been told that she was going to be fine and able to do elite, and then not been able to, she would've been devastated.

When I got diabetes, the doctors said there would be a cure in ten years. Literally, they said, "Don't even worry, we'll have a cure before you're in college. You barely will have it."
It has been 43 years since my diagnosis. When I started rolling up in the tenth anniversary, I was in agony. Maybe being blunt isn't the worst.

Same. I lost an eye at 16, and (with a 16-year-old's priorities) the part that upset me most was not being able to do gymnastics again. The doctors tried to give me the "well, maybe you can do SOME stuff" hope but it was devastating to get back in the gym and realize that depth perception was a thing of the past and competing NCAA wasn't even close to reality anymore. Regardless of the exact verbiage the doctors gave Suni, I'm glad she was determined to do whatever she had to in order to come back to the highest level her body felt capable of doing again.

Irony of that is I have no depth perception if I'm without glasses/contacts. Been wearing contacts since I was 8yo cuz sports glasses fogged up.

Not Reddit, but this FB gem popped up on my feed today:

For a while i was getting clickbait garbage about Simone announcing she was pregnant during the Olympics. Luckily that trash didn't seem to get any traction but there were hundreds of people congratulating her on it so I guess the page got the clicks they were looking for.
