To be fair, maybe they put the question to the AIIt takes every ounce of restraint in my body sometimes not to reply to these kinds of Reddit threads (I JUST saw the first one in this thread). "Do you not have access to Google? Do you know what the word 'alternate' means in general? You're familiar enough with WAG to know the team members' names, but you don't know how a competition works?"
I literally got corrected by a non gym friend yesterday, I was like "she was never an alternate what are you talking about"You know I'd totally forgotten that Emma Malabuyo was a non-travelling alternate for team USA in Tokyo
But don’t all the swimming athletes in a relay get a medal? They don’t go on the podium if they are on the team for prelims and not finals but I always thought they got a medal. In the USA TF lineup thread (Hezley's not doing any events in TF):

Edit: On second thought, I guess this is a semi-legit question. Participants in racing sports don't get medals if their teammates place in the finals. So I can sort of understand the reasoning that other mostly-individual sports might work the same way.
They aren't alternates in swimming, they were just the qualifications shift. But if you were in the relay pool but not chosen to swim, no medal. But Hezly will be on the floor with them and will be on the podium if they medal -- she competed, she medals with the team. But don’t all the swimming athletes in a relay get a medal? Its not semi-legit for someone to ask this and its just kind of cruel. In the USA TF lineup thread (Hezley's not doing any events in TF):

asking if she gets a medal. I could be wrong but that was my immediate response. Hezly has got to feel really really bad right about now. People questioning whether she gets a medal has to make her feel even worse . Although I did write on this forum about how she was not contributing anything so that was kind of cruel too. What's cruel?
In swimming, if you are only a relay team in prelims and/or semis and the team ends up qualifying to the big final and gets on the podium, you do get a team medal - at least at OG. One of my colleagues has a swimming gold even though they did not swim in the final. They aren't alternates in swimming, they were just the qualifications shift.
