Most US teams seem to have a forgotten athlete (or 2). And no one remembers the team names unless nbc goes whole hog on them like "the fierce five". Do casual fans remember Kyla Ross or Maddie or Grace? One and done athletes are always going to struggle to be seen around the stars unless they distinguish themselves like Mckayla Maroney.

If Hezley had a standout event, she might be getting noticed for more than her youth, but the 5th athlete was always going to be a placeholder (and that would still be true if Shi had made it and Jordan was the 5th. She wouldn't have any EFs if Jade hadn't missed and probably would have sat TF like Hezley did on a team of Suni, Shi, Simone, and Jade).

I asked my mom, a casual fan, who was on the 2012 team. She remembered Douglas and Raisman (though only Gabby by name) and Mckayla (although only for the disappointed meme) and not Jordyn or Kyla. Yeah, one data point doesn't make a set, but fact is, some athletes leave the Olympics with attention that lasts and others leave with attention that wanes. It is up to Hezley to make sure her attention lasts if that is what she wants--either by keeping on with gymnastics or taking advantage of commercial opportunities. (Mom remembered everyone but Maddie from 2016 but only remembered Laurie was there cuz she is literally the announcer now and they said so on the broadcast)

Hezly is their Sophia, only in reverse. Sophia was well past "golden years" but she was an equal member of the group anyway. Hezly isn't old enough yet, but she is just as important.
