Gabby could submit a petition but it will be denied.
Gymcastic spoke to Sacramone at US Classic, and Sacramone said if one attempts AA and does not make it but gets a 2 or 3 event score they cannot petition to do AA at Nationals.

Kind of crazy that Suni worked a loophole and Gabby did not.

I like what Jessica and Denis talked about. Let the athlete do the AA, but just not count the scores on the events they didn't qualify for, nor allow their AA score to be in the rankings.
Athletes shouldn't be penalized for attempting new skills or new routines.
They should let Gabby do a bar routine at the end of Warm Ups in her rotation.

Have the Brevet judges score it.

Use that as a gauge of her "readiness" as a factor for her Olympic Trials petition (where she can petition to compete AA, am I right?)

Kinda like how she competed at American Cup in 2012 but her scores didn't count.

Douglas does not need to petition to Trials.

She can be invited to Trials based on her performance at Nationals on VT, UB, and BB.

Everyone invited to Trials is free to compete AA at Trials.

Only the top 2 AA are qualified to go straight to Olympic Trials. Everyone else competing at Trials will be there at the invitation of the selection committee.

ETA: Douglas is qualified to compete on UB at Nationals, it’s FX she’s not qualified on. Suni was the one previously not qualified on UB.

Based on her training videos, the idea she wouldn't score a 51 AA given two bites of the cherry would have been absurd. I'm not surprised.

My bad! I meant do a floor routine on the podium.

What training videos? The extremely limited clips of a skill here and there? A couple of warm up/podium training vids where Valeri spots her through the entire bar routine?

Look, I don't doubt Gabby could easily surpass a 51 if she hits. But she has yet to hit. I'm not holding my breath that she's going to start suddenly hitting like it's 2012. On top of that, her routine construction is an absolute mess. It's actively frustrating how piss poor her routine design is, and not maximizing her chances to succeed.

Douglas scored 50.650 at American Classic. If she kept all the the falls and just stayed in bounds on FX (she lost .4 in OOB), she'd have passed 51.0 AA.

It really doesn't matter at this point though. For Douglas all that matters at Nationals is her individual event ranking on UB or BB. A strong vault both nights and a top 6-8 finish on either UB or BB may be enough to receive an invite to Trials.

US Classic
8th on UB was 13.650
8th on BB was 13.550

I'd say she needs to be scoring above that ^^ to move forward.

Gabby is only going to Paris if Suni pulls out and can't do bars. That's the only universe in which she's going.

And even then, you'd be rolling the dice putting her up in TF when you could take Jordan and she would get you a solid hit.

Speaking in completely unrealistic hypotheticals:

I suppose it comes down to whether you want to take Jordan or Skye if Suni is on the team. If you lean towards Skye like I do, if in some fantasy world Gabby starts hitting her sets, she adds more to the team than Skye does. It’s not like you are going to take Skye because she is more consistent.

Having two 13.1 backup floor routines isn’t the end of the world.

Do you really want to risk Jordan with the possibility of a Tokyo pen?

It is interesting how having two amazing AA gymnasts really changes the equations plus having a team of five. There is so much wiggle room with Simone and Shilese being excellent on everything. In Rio, you had to bring someone for ub to compensate for Aly's weakness, in Tokyo, you had to ignore specialists to have coverage on every event in case one of the 4 came down with covid (or twisties). Simone and Shilese fill two thirds of TF routines and no one is outscoring either of them by more than a few tenths that a balance check can eliminate.

It is going to totally fill the next quad with lots of "what if" discussions because anyone of the top contenders could be theoretically slotted in without a major impact.

Chiles didn't do so horribly with Tokyo pen really.
She fell on bars and beam in TQ. In TF she had a 14.166 on bars which is usable. she had a 13.400 on beam, no great but not horrible.
Floor is where the entire US suffered and it didn't help that Chiles fell in TF for 11.700
Chiles went 5/8 routines in Tokyo having previously hit every routine in 2021 lead up.

If Classics judging is anything to go by (maybe they got an FIG memo or something), the Paris judging surprise will be on vault.

Classics showed noticeably lower E scores on vault. Huge deductions for lack of height, and failure to maintain full stretch. And big deductions on the table. Vaults that were reliably getting 9.1 or 9.0 last year were getting 8.7s and 8.8s.

All good steps. I can see the FIG deciding to hammer E scores on vault because "the scores don't line up with other events" and not the reason it should be (that vaults like Paseka's Cheng weren't nearly separated enough from vaults like Simone's and Rebeca's).

Beam judging at Classics was international standard (for most), but it wasn't "Tokyo" pen (unfortunately).

Still, it must be difficult coaching Josc. You never know what scores she's going to fucking get.

I like the way you framed the choice. I am less afraid of Jordan being hit with Tokyo pen than I am of Skye simply not being up to the moment. A lot of this is due to how sharp Jordan was at 2022 worlds. Yes she missed beam in Qualification but she didn’t waver in finals and she seemed cleaner on floor. (Now if she shows up this weekend with upgrades that are sloppy and Skye nails her routines…).

Unless there are injuries, neither would probably be used for more than one routine.

I hadn't thought about this — with Jones and Biles capable of scoring top 3 on all 4 apparatus, it really means you only need Carey on VT/FX and Suni on BB/UB. The fifth person is there as a back-up and, yeah, Chiles is the best in that regard.

Yep Shilese and Simone are so damn good they really make it not that complicated. Take someone who can medal on VT and someone who can medal on UB then the next best AA who can cover all events just in case.

There is some confusion because Gymcastic said Gabby petitioned to be able to petition to do AA and that was denied.
