The commentators were talking something about a crunched ankle so maybe that might be part of it?

Having a bad qualifications is a mixed bag. Sure no medals are on the line, but it determines the trajectory of the rest of your competition and if you're going to even get the opportunity to win medals. At this point both Malone and Hashimoto's only chance for a medal is TFs and the former is running the risk of coming home with nothing.
