Between this and Seitz’ injury, the Aussies/Romanians are breathing a sigh of relief, and Korea/Mexico will like their chances to pull an upset. It’s gonna be a great battle for 13-15th.
Agreed. Hungary will also be in the race.

Hungary’s another team I’d like to qualify. Zoja Szekely went 14 on bars at the Szombathely WC, and Lila Czifra put up some decent numbers. They really need Kovacs to hit all 4 pieces though. If she’s not on, I don’t think they have a chance.

If there’s any truth to this (not sure how reliable it is having been passed from the main source then through Weibo then reddit…), things aren’t looking good for China. This coaching drama is reminiscent of the Bela days.

The final German trials is happening at the moment. It doubles as a quint-meet with France, GB, Switzerland, and Romania. I think the likely team is Malewski, Schaefer-Betz, Voss, Jauch, and the last spot between Quass and Schoenmaier. Sophie Scheder is no longer trying for Worlds, Schaefer-Betz bruised her foot a short while ago, and Voss is coming back from injury.

I saw that too. Can’t speak to the reliability of it, but we’ve known how big a part politics is being allowed to play in Chinese team selections for a while, haven’t we? So the narrative would broadly fit, even if the details didn’t.

Hell, Austria might have a better shot than Belgium. Derwael’s chances of winning the nominative slot are okay. I know they’ve said they won’t, but if the Russian Federation competes for an UB slot, I don’t see Derwael making the Olympics

There are two spots available on bars through the World Cups and Russia can only take one. Everyone else with a good chance of beating Derwael is likely to qualify or be on a qualifying team at Worlds.

The thing I’m wondering though is how long does it take to recover from a dislocated shoulder, especially for a bars specialist? World Cups start in February.

Lisa Vaelen could also qualify through the World Cups on vault, or the AA spot at Euros. I think they’ll struggle to even finish top 15 at Worlds for a non-nominative spot there.

The coach allegedly lying about their athlete’s potential must be a new low, no? I fear this team is going to implode in Antwerp. I hope Qiu’s situation isn’t as bad as it sounds.

That could potentially be really bad news for Chuso’s Olympic bid.

I don’t know how long dislocated shoulders normally take to come back from. The only one I can remember right now is Ray on floor in Sydney. That was an unusual pop-out pop-in during a routine scenario though.

Full meet here:

Results from the Heidelburg friendly. Even without Seitz, I think Germany still has a shot at qualifying a team if they can replicate those UB/BB performances. Quaas’ VT/FX adds about a half point more to the team total than Schoenmaier who would be a solid alternate.

Romania would’ve been close to 160 with hits from Barbosu/Voinea on UB/BB respectively. Ghigoarta had a disaster on bars and her beam wasn’t top 3, but with what she showed at Rom Gym Trophy, they’d be daft not to include her on the main team. I think Oprea will be the alternate despite placing top 3 on VT/UB/BB.

The E scores are extremely high for them, definitely loose/domestic scoring. I don’t anticipate anyone getting an 8.4 E score on beam at Worlds, but would love to be wrong. Lots of 8.3s and 8.4s on bars beam and floor for Germany. Doesn’t seem like realistic scoring.

Germany
WAG: Meolie Jauch, Emma Malewski, Lea Marie Quaas, Pauline Schäfer, Karina Schönmaier, Sarah Voss (5th spot/alternate TBD)

MAG: Pascal Brendel, Lukas Dauser, Nils Dunkel, Lucas Kochan, Andreas Toba (alternate: Nick Klessing)

WAG: Meolie Jauch, Emma Malewski, Lea Marie Quaas, Pauline Schäfer, Karina Schönmaier, Sarah Voss (5th spot/alternate TBD)
I think it is between Quass and Schonmaier for the 5th and alternate.

VT: (Schafer) Malewski, Quass/Schonmaier, Voss
UB: (Voss) Schafer, Malewski, Jauch
BB: (Quass/Schonmaier) Malewski, Schafer, Voss *desperately need to have 3 BIG beam scores *
FX: (Malewski) Schafer, Quass/Schonmaier, Voss

Schafer, Voss, Malewski (All Around)
Schonmaier/Quass VT/BB/FX
Jauch UB

Not named team, but Finland’s Maisa Kuusikko will miss worlds due to a knee injury. A huge blow. She was 13th AA last year.

Ugh gutting, that’s beyond rubbish. There goes Paris 🥺

Wow. No Suni. I wonder if health issues.
I had all of these gymnasts going but not Lowe- that is a surprise to me.

Per USA Gymnastics, Suni was invited but has chosen not to participate.
