😆 Did you accept their congratulations or explain?

I’ve had randoms around me ask where I’m from because they can’t figure it out when I cheer for everyone and sometimes have multiple flags. My main audience memory from 2011 Euros is being so angry that they confiscated my camera on WAG qualis day (I snuck it in for the rest of the comp).

Perhaps we need a thread about live gymnastics crowd experiences. Worlds 2019 was my last competition so this is the longest I’ve gone without since the 90s.

I’ll contribute something on topic by saying that BRA is only sending Andrade for WAG. 🤷‍♀️ Guess they don’t believe in giving gymnasts experience to improve their chances of team qualification.

Nobody has ever shushed me
I was shushed by the person sitting in front of me when Jordan didn’t qualify to the AA and I was trying to explain why the tears were flowing to my non-gymnastics fan friend sitting next to me.

I guess I was a little overwhelmed by the moment haha.

Why on earth were you shushed for that? Sometimes it’s necessary to fill in the backstory when you’ve taken a muggle with you to the big game.

Sounds like a decent WAG team. GMF and Claudia in particular were locks and they could both make a final in this field. For the men it’s Brinn Bevan, Dom Cunningham, Joe Cemlyn-Jones, Joshua Nathan, Courtney Tulloch and Hayden Skinner.

Maybe I was talking to loud? I guess I was giving pretty detailed commentary haha

I’m so glad Dom has gotten the opportunity to go to Worlds and make something of this year. 2020/21 has been really hard on him. I worry that he might be a little unprepared though. He didn’t look in the best shape and I don’t know how much you can really do in a month.

US Men’s Team announced.

Moldauer and Malone (likely AAers, I think)
Whittenburg (VT but probably another event or two, I’d think)
Diab (SR)
Nedoroscik and Yoder, both PH specialists

Wait, how many compete on each apparatus at this worlds? Is it 3 or 4? If there are two PH specialists, does that mean there’s only one AAer?

3 per apparatus.

Whittenburg, Nedoroscik, and Yoder all qualified automatically. Yul is the only AA as the auto-qualifier from trials, unless they were to switch him for some reason. There’s not room for another AA with Steve/Alec also auto-qualifying.

Malone would have been the best choice for AA placement but I guess he’s just planning to compete HB since that’s all he did at trials.

The work plan for worlds has been published, document 6 at the link below.

FIG - Event Detail (gymnastics.sport)

It includes starting times for sessions. I worked out that the BST times are 10am start for MAG AA, 10.15 for the women, 6.20 on Day 1 of EFs and 5.55 on Day 2. Prelims and other time zones are beyond me.

Claudia Fragapane is injured and withdraws from Worlds.

Italy: Carafiglio (FX), Iorio (UB/BB), D’Amato (AA), D’Amato (AA)

Russia: Melnikova (AA), Mineava (AA), Urasova (UB), Vorona (BB/FX)

Oh, I did not realize that Melnikova and Urazova were going.

I’m surprised Giorgia Villa isn’t going. Is she still injured?

Don’t we all!

This would’ve been such a good opportunity for her. The vault podium could actually be quite competitive for such a depleted worlds, depending on what people like Murukami and Melnikova do about 2nd vaults, but several EF spots are wide open. Only 3 of the 13 gymnasts who beat her in Tokyo prelims are going to be at worlds. Devillard and Qi Qi will also be there and should qualify, but still, there’s room.

Rich looked into the floor scores too - only Andrade, Melnikova and Murakami competing at Worlds in the top 15 ish in Tokyo prelims.
