Oh, I guess Miller could have had 1990 Worlds if they had existed. What a weird 10 years of Worlds changing around constantly… no Worlds in 1990 and 1998, but then 1994 with two, and then Worlds in both Olympic years of 1992 and 1996.

Just keeping that stuff in a proper thread, so it is contained by a “trigger warning”.

I participated in the conversation about it, but just trying to be mindful of people reading the thread and not anticipating that type of discussion within this thread considering the thread title.

Produnova did one unbelievable vault at a minor competition. She shouldn’t be anywhere any discussion on great vaulters, as much as I love her

That vault is on the shortlist for the best ever individual vault performed by a WAG, but it doesn’t make her the best vaulter. Not when we have gymnasts who have done multiple great vaults from different families.

Produnova occupies what I think is quite a unique spot on vault, and to a lesser extent as a tumbler, by being superb and even world leading in one aspect then completely ordinary in others. The Produnova vault speaks for itself, as does the utter inability of any other WAG to get anywhere close. Meanwhile her Yurchenkos were mediocre, her straight front and Phelps sometimes horrifying, and her Tsuk 1.5 inconsistent. Same with front tumbling. There aren’t many better front tumblers than her, but a consistent double pike was beyond her.

Mind you, Produnova probably could’ve been Olympic AA champion in 2000, as it turned out. Admittedly in a not quite standard set of circumstances.

Almost visibly so at times. Which speaks volumes for how good she really was. It makes me quite unhappy that she never ended up with an individual gold in anything.

Has there ever been anyone so insanely consistent as Catalina Ponor on beam (especially in her early years). She never fell. Plus she had flawless connections and was so fluent on beam. The only thing I disliked was her full in in 2004. I admired her for doing it, but is was a hot mess.

I was never a fan of Ponor, but she was special on beam. She competed practically every acro skill there is and her combination variations were insane

Definitely. Very few had that level of fluency and versatility. To still be doing a routine like her 2017 Euros winner pushing 30 is incredible too, although that’s another area where there’s no level footing between eras. The opportunity to carry on for multiple quads is much greater now than it was in eg the 80s.
