Did Japan just take the top 4 AAers from All Japan + NHK combined? For an individual worlds? Did they hire Tom Forester to come in and somehow make their selection process even worse than it usually is?

The top 4 AAers were also the top finishers on each event.

They named the World Team in May based on results at All Japan Championships and NHK Trophy. Sugihara Aiko was the champion. The women's team announcement is at the top of this thread.

Miyata Shoko was 7th at All Japan and then 8th at NHK.
This is just endlessly frustrating. How unbelievably short sighted to leave an athlete who has gone 55+ internationally this season at home.

Picking athletes for an October completion in May is just the dumbest system ever.

I feel like you can pick ONE athlete that early if they are heads above everyone (your team's Andrade or Biles) and tell them, keep up the good work, don't kill yourself, but for for pacing. But a whole team? So dumb.

Imagine who would be the team if USA based their selections on Winter Cup?

It’s not really an equal comparison lol.

Japanese WAG knew All Japan and NHK were deciding the World Team (as they do almost every year) so they knew to train and peak for those competitions (as they do every year.)

Winter Cup decided what, two spring assignments? Wong, Roberson, and Blakely didn’t even attend because it wasn’t required for anything to do with Worlds, their only goal for this year.

Exactly, but for someone like Rivera, pacing is absolutely everything, as we've seen two years in a row where she has failed to impress until it mattered most. She wouldn't have made the World team based on performances around May.

I hope she can hold onto this form for two more months, as she looks very impressive. I never would've imagined saying she could maybe upgrade vault in the future until I saw her day 2 DTY for example. She's turning into a great AAer with medal potential on two individual events as well.

I don’t think we can definitively say she would or wouldn’t have made the team in May. She wasn’t ready in May this year because she didn’t need to be. If Nationals were in May for 2025 her training plan for the year would have been different, just like it was different last year when Nationals were May 30th.
