Someone on Reddit tallied up the eleven cases where an Olympic medal has been stripped for something other than doping.
If the medal swap goes ahead, Jordan will be the only person to lose a medal through no fault of her own.
She really is, and Jordan will also probably "benefit" from all of this in the long-term as the gymnast who was wronged. The only person not winning much ss Voinea, and her and her mum's reactions aren't going to help with that either.Ana is a class act.
USOPC to appeal:
They can’t award Voinea anything. Her situation whilst unfortunate, is irrelevant to the actual dispute. If you believe you have been score incorrectly, you need to appeal it within the given time. The more I think about this, the more I think the right decision would have been for the FIG to issue a mea culpa and award bronze to all three gymnasts, or two if they could provide compelling evidence of Voinea's OOB. I realise it's a bit of a stretch to have to prove an OOB, but the photo of her heel being above the line has really muddied the waters. This result is just too shitty to the athletes, who have done nothing wrong.
Yeah, she is right though. Not that the situation bears any similarities, but she lost 2 gold medals to cheating. I’d still be bitterA bad day to be a narcissist View attachment 11089
Dong Fangxiao's teammates also lose the medal through no fault of their own. (Whether Dong can be argued to be at fault is a different question that I don't want to wade into -- but the other members of the team weren't involved at all.)If the medal swap goes ahead, Jordan will be the only person to lose a medal through no fault of her own.
Technically they didn’t. The medal is awarded to China, who absolutely were at fault. We also don’t know that she was the only one underage, nor if her team mates were aware of her real ageDong Fangxiao's teammates also lose the medal through no fault of their own. Yup this. I foresee scores taking forever now. Maybe all routines should just be judged in replay. Or less fucking dance elements. What if this happened in TQ?
And it affected who competed in TF, merely 2 days later.
What the fuck would have happened if, say, Netherlands qualified in 8th due to a late appeal being wrongly accepted, and France came 9th.
By the time it got to CAS, TF was over. France didn’t compete.
This brings up a wider discussion about inquiries. It really needs to be fixed. Certainly, human error with respect to OOB and Time violations absolutely need to be eliminated. If Wimbledon can spot a ball going 1mm over a line at 130mph, gymnastics can fucking do a toe going OOB.
No one should ever need to appeal a wrong OOB deduction.
There’s been loads of bad OOB calls! Largely benefitting KhorkinaI mean, having judges sitting in the corners with a flag worked pretty well for 70 years
