There weren’t any seasonings other than salt and pepper for poor farmers so they tried to season what they had with fat. Otherwise it’s just boiled beans. And I refused to eat it either way. I didn’t own any seasonings until I moved out of my parents’ house and bought my own things. Then I started cooking other ways.

The American south was mostly very poor until one generation ago.

I think seasoning is definitely more of an American thing. Most people just use salt and pepper surely?

Seasonings usually refers to things like various herbs, chili powders (generic chili, ancho, chipotle, etc.), paprika, even garlic, that sort of stuff.

Some food are great with just some salt and pepper. Sometimes, you don't even need that. Other vegetables demand more. Boiled beans is definitely one of those, brussel sprouts is another.

My mother is of an age where all fat and all salt is EVIL. Our food was flavorless, imo, and even today, the food she cooks is so bland. We ate lots of plain oven-baked skinless chicken breasts and green beans boiled until they were limp growing up. And then I moved to the upper midwest, land of a beige buffet. It wasn't until I spent 6 months in Italy that I learned food could be amazing with little effort, and a joyous communal experience to boot.

once I moved out on my own i loved to cook. Love to eat. Seasonings are very important. A few restaurant meals taught me about food. Cookbooks were also eye-opening.

If 2026 does manage to go ahead, I can’t see the CWGs surviving beyond that without huge change

The games folding would be unfortunate for the smallest Commonwealth members. I hope the CGF implement reforms to make hosting desirable. Mitt Romney's always available if they need help.

Here were the sports played in 2022.

I hope gymnastics is not cut. They were cut from the 1982 and 1986 CWG.
Swimming and Diving and Athletics will likely stay.

Surely they will keep the most popular sports.

Rhythmic was already on the cards to be cut but I can't see the cutting WAG.

The 10 I think they will go with
1. Swimming
2. Diving
3. Athletics
4. Artistic Gym
5. Cycling
6. Boxing
7. Table Tennis
8. Weightlifting
9. Beach Vollyball
10. Field Hockey

If you're counting "cycling" as one sport with three sub-categories (track, road, MTB and hey Glasgow has an international standard BMX track so why not chuck that in too) then why drop rhythmic while keeping artistic instead of just saying "we're doing gymnastics"? I don't envy the people making the choices - it would be easy to just cut ones that won't draw a big crowd in Scotland (wrestling, weightlifting, judo, maybe badminton) but by doing that you remove many sports where teams other than the home nations, Canada, Aus and NZ might expect to do well.

Artistic gymnastics was insanely popular in Birmingham - I remember watching on TV and the venue was packed out even to watch the very basic routines of subdivision one.

Things like wrestling and weightlifting have the advantage of being cheap to stage (any indoor gym venue is probably enough) but having generally low draw of spectators. Something like rugby 7s is probably more expensive to host with the venue needs and whatnot but you can probably sell more tickets. I'd bet rugby over weightlifting.

They want to trim down to four venues as well. That puts things like rugby 7s and lawn bowls on the chop because of their more specialised requirements. Not sure exactly what they mean by venues. In 2014 the weightlifting and parasport powerlifting venue was a stones throw from the gymnastics arena. They could count that as a single venue hub?

I just figured since Rhythmic was already being dropped when it was going to be a full version in Victoria, there is no chance it stays for a paired back version of the games.

If I recall, it was likely due to limited crowd interest and the field of athletes not being particularly strong.

Only two athletes from the Commonwealth made the Olympics for RG.
Australia was a quota for Oceania and Cyprus was a quota for Europe through Continentals.

WAG and MAG had more representation in Paris and not through quota/continental qualification.
