I think Suni's competition on Saturday demonstrated that she needs a period of uninterrupted training to get herself on track. Even with the really generous scores she got (7.9E on bb with a fall) she doesn't seem ready yet. To me it doesn't really make sense to interrupt training again to dash over to Baku just to get a skill named. She needs to be fully ready in 3 months. I mean getting a skill named is a "nice to have" but not at the expense of solid training and building endurance. It makes me wonder whether she is truly aiming at the Olympics.

She also clearly needs to take care of her fragile health - another reason perhaps to avoid flying out to Baku (in flu and Covid season) and having to manage unfamiliar foods and the depletion of travel and competing.
It's a difficult one. You make great points, but equally the lack of international experience this quad is a potential issue too. Especially after what happened to Jordan in Tokyo. If Suni does want to make a run at Paris, I can see how she might think Baku beneficial to her case. She has a lot of things to balance in a short time.

For all that Suni was probably a beneficiary of the Tokyo Olympic delay, the short quad is working against her now. This would probably be quite a different discussion if it were being had in February 2023.

Still no announcement on spring assignments. I wonder what the hold up is. I know the plan was to announce WAG and MAG jointly.

Is this what was already posted before or is this new? According to IG it was updated today.

I think that some federations were updated (Malabuyo for Philippines). But Chiles and Miller were placeholders for the US, so the US hasn't updated yet.

Yes, and Derwael is on that updated list too, instead of O'Driscoll, as expected.
I suppose there must be some deadline to update?

Am I the only one who thinks that this goal of getting a skill named after her is a weird one for Suni to be foregrounding during the Olympic year? Like, if she wants to make the Olympic team, surely she can construct a routine using that skill and thus get it named after her in Paris? I think her time would be better served getting her routines ready for the upcoming meets than traveling across the world on the merits of a skill that she has yet to catch in competition.
To loosely quote Carly Patterson, "Forgrounding? I'm not sure what that means."

It would make sense to get the skill named now and then not put such a risky skill in your Olympic bar routine if you are hoping to medal.

It would also make sense to get the skill named now if you do not have confidence that your health will allow you to train at the level required to compete for an Olympic spot . . . <--Is this what you mean?

I'm sorry you're having trouble with the word "foregrounding," but sure, she's certainly signaling that the Olympics are not likely. But they are going to be even less likely if she wastes precious training time making a trip to perform a watered down bars routine halfway around the world.

Is Suni actually training/capable of training AA or is she hoping that the US will take her to Paris just for UB and BB?

Does Stephen N have any chance of being on the Olympic team with one event?

Surprised to see women are only doing DTB mixed cup. The team competition would have given more athletes a chance to compete

The choices are.... interesting. I would have expected to see Rivera get an assignment

I'm impressed with selection committee not sending Suni since she clearly wasn't ready. I was expecting them to send her due to her name/profile. But good for them, set a precedence that you have to hit to get an assignment.

I'm also surprised they aren't sending a WAG team to DTB. Maybe there wasn't enough interest in an early assignment? Seems like a missed opportunity to test out the depth.

I think Pacific Rim and Pan Am are more prestigious competitions and that's where the top gymnasts (potential contenders for Olympic Team) will go.
Agree about Pokal. Last year they sent 7 WAG total to Stuttgart.
