I remember watching a Meng Fei video (on VHS obv) in 1998, probably old tapes of 1997 Worlds (I was like 12), and my sister told me that she recently heard that Meng Fei had died doing a vault. It made me so sad!

Now I know she had probably heard the story of Sang Lan and gotten the two confused.

But whenever I see Meng Fei I always think back to that awful feeling in my stomach I had when she told me that!

End of sidebar!

So what happens with the YDP now?!

I feel like it’s one of those loose ends to the Simone story that might not get tidied up for a few decades.

I know we all want her to “go to a World Cup and get it named” but we all know Simone is done until mid 2022 at the very earliest. Probably 2023 - if at all.

If someone performs it in ten years time - would we still informally call it “the Biles” even if it’s not.

What about the Carey too?!

Idk, no one calls it the Mostepanova or the Choe or the Skinner. I feel like it should be referred to by the name of whoever performs it first in international comp. Really gonna start consistently calling the Onodi skill a Mostepanova, hope ur all ok with that x

Dude you just sent me to Wikipedia to confirm whether Sang Lan indeed died from her injury! 😬

She is still very much alive.

I’m kinda annoyed that she performed it onto competition surfaces in podium training and it doesn’t get her name in the COP.

Part of me thinks that PT at Worlds and Olympics should count for naming purposes.

It is 2021, almost 2022.
The entire FIG conferences and congress have been held virtually for a year and a half.

IMO, if you compete a skill successfully at a meet, it should be named after you upon filing a submission via video clip.

It is unfair to many gymnasts that create a skill but will never make it to a FIG sanctioned event.

There is no reason with the current technology and video capturing that FIG can’t go this route.

Just my opinion.

So any gymnast of any level could just send in a skill via video?
Why not? It is not just elite gymnasts that have created unique skills. We even have NCAA WAG and MAG that have unique skills.

Why can’t an athlete that won’t make a power house team get a skill named for themselves?

I agree it should be special but like irichluck21 stated, many athletes would never been able to make a team. I’m glad there is an O’Neil, Sohn etc that would have never been possible before letting specialists or alternate ways besides worlds every 2/4 years(now yearly) or Olympics every 4 years

But with the inclusion of World Cup events, any gymnast who is amongst the top in their country has a very good chance to compete at an event where they can submit their element

There’s a huge difference between any random person sending in a video to the FIG, and Simone. Who completed the skill on competition surfaces, on the podium, at the Olympics, in real time live in front of thirty FIG judges.

I’m pretty sure the judges conference occurs immediately after podium training. And the “skills to be named” book is released after that conference.

But it’s still not the same as competing it. You can Chuck anything you like in podium training because it doesn’t matter. There are no stakes. If anything it would encourage dangerous behaviour
