At first I was worried that complaining about the silly things Jessica O’bern (spelling?) said on gymcastic would overwhelm the conversation but I realized you qualified your suggestion saying we would discuss the best gym podcasts. 😜

Kathy and Bridget talked about team construction from the perspective of wanting to get the top three routine for three up, three count AND wanting to make sure that you have back up. Bridget reminded us to at two athletes on her team got injured at the games. They sound like my people. (Although with a five person team you could have one specialist.)

OT, but I'm curious - does anyone know what the identical trophies behind Bridget are from? I'm trying to think of something she might have accomplished nine times. Can't be national team trophies, can it?

Those are her 9 NCAA champion’s trophies: 3 times team, 2 times AA, 2 times UB, and 2 times BB.

I found some more Gymnastics podcasts that I thought might interest other forum members.

I've been listening to gymcastic a little and noticed that Kensley (the men's gym person) hadn't been on recently. She has her own podcast, Neutral Deductions! A recent (short) episode focuses on the British MAG team. She thinks that the selection indicates British MAG are pushing more for individual medals maybe at the expense of a team bronze medal.

Kensley was a guest on Sam Oldham's show/podcast to discuss the USA MAG team selection. Around minute 15-20 on episode 71, she points out that for a number of years USA MAG team selection has relied more heavily on specialists and favored highest potential scoring teams. However, the 2023 USA MAG team had more AAers and fewer specialists . . . and that was the squad that finally won a medal. Interesting food for thought.

Does anyone else have podcasts/shows to recommend?

Oh that's neat. I didn't initially like Kensley, but she either matured as a presenter or just grew on me over time (I think more the former). Makes sense for her to have her own show as Gymcastic just isn't MAG oriented enough.

It's not new, but I enjoy Nicole Langevin's What Makes You Think. She gets interesting guests and I enjoy hearing the perspectives of people who are working inside the sport.

Flipping Out with Bridget Sloan isn't bad. I thought I'd enjoy it more with KJC there for every episode this season, but I find she kind of ... dominates? The balance is somewhat off between them. But otherwise it's enjoyable.

Heath Thorpe's is/was good, but it's still up in the air as to whether it's going to last. I'm sure it's been challenging to produce this year given all his Olympic prep - and presumed disappointment after not qualifying. I'm subscribed and will continue to listen if he continues to produce.

I’ve liked Kensley’s podcast more than I thought I would. I didn’t love her on Gymcastic but I think a lot of that is because her vocal cadence reminds me of someone who I know and don’t like.
Heaths’s has been good too but it doesn’t seem like he’s going to stick with it.

You are right about the balance being off between Bridget and KJC. I like hearing from Kathy so I haven't minded much. Although, this week's episode was skipable. There is no new news and Kathy presented her points system for talking about team selection . . . skippable.

Thanks for the other recs. I'm binging Olympics and team selection right now.
