So it's officially fall, after the Olympics, which means that very little is happening gymnastically beyond the GOAT tour (yeah) and I guess Dancing with the Stars, if you count that. A real dearth of gymnastics content, in any case. So who's up for rewatching some old competitions?

People have suggested rewatching Barcelona over on the GOAT tour thread; personally it's not my jam but I'll join in if that's the preference. Otherwise, I'd suggest the 1998 Goodwill Games - it was the first major comp for the seniors who got caught up in the new age rules post-1996. I haven't rewatched it at least since I got rid of/lost my VHS collection, so I'm due.

Otherwise, I'd be keen on 2015 Worlds (never watched them) or basically any Euros that were particularly good.

Ideas?

1998 goodwill games is a good one. But there is a LOT to unpack there with the whole Sang Lan injury, John Holman’s video etc

Oh god, I forgot her injury was at that competition!!
 
I’m more up for 98 GWG as it’s a comp that isn’t discussed as much. However I’m biased because Moceanu got me into the sport 😉

Will watch either and anything 🤸

ETA
Agree that Euros in their heyday (when they were once every two years and Romania were good) are a decent shout. 2000 Euros were particularly exciting. Not sure I’ve ever seen 92 Euros.

Fun thread! I've been rewatching some competitions from the 1970s and early '80s. It's hard to recommend a specific meet, but anything with Filatova, Mukhina, Naimushina, Shaposhikova, Yurchenko, and/or Kathy Johnson is well worth the time.

Oh, I do have a soft spot for 1983 Worlds because it's the first event I watched as a knowledgeable fan. I'd just discovered International Gymnast magazine, and it was a game-changer. Before then, I could only identify skills as "cool fllppy things "
 
I need a rewatch of GWG. I remember watching it live and being AMAZED at the shape Moceanu was in, considering the last we saw her was 97 Worlds. Granted she did the pro meets in early 1998 but she didn't look anything like she did at GWG.
I think she would have won nationals if not for the knee injury. She is one who really did not benefit from no Worlds in 1998. With Romania depth a bit low, Russia being Russia, the USA team could have challenged for a World Team gold that year.
Maloney, Moceau, Atler, Thompson, Ray, Antolin/Dantzscher would have been formidable that year.
 
I wonder if there was a Worlds in the autumn of '98 and USA brought home a couple of medals, if Bela would have still been dragged out a year later to start the camp system. 1999 may have looked like more of a fluke on the back of a more successful 1998.
 
So to organize a watch party, do we agree on a time to watch on YouTube at the same time and posting on here or create a Discord and somebody can stream from their computer and chat on there?
 
That would be fun, though I'm not sure how realistic a synchronised session is, given the geographic spread among members here. @MaryClare, this was originally your idea, no? Any thoughts on format? No pressure, just wondering if you had something in mind.

I think the easiest way is to 1 rewatch per week, with a thread for each week.

This thread would remain for discussing which meets we want to watch
 
Just rewatched the 90s GWG a month ago.

Yeah 86, 90, 94, 98, 01 we should watch them all since only 5 games worth.

I would love to go back and watch Pan American or University Games- especially the 90s.
