I have no regrets, and I'm really proud that I finished, but it was definitely a long and painful journey. I don't encourage my students to pursue Ph.D.s, especially if it means taking on a lot of debt with only limited prospects for well-paying, full-time work.

Since Ferrari has just retired, how about we add one of her key competitions to the list? I’d suggest 2007 Euros AA rather than 2006 Worlds AA as it’s a less watched and discussed comp (also avoids the winning with a fall debate, unless we want to rehash that of course!). I had a look at the results and there were some surprising rankings plus some gymnasts I’d forgotten were competing then.
Great suggestion. It can be next weeks

I vote for the 2007 Euros. It's a great comp. I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts on this one.

Same.
I contemplated going for my PhD in Reading and Literacy.
But remembered how much fun my final projects/papers were for Masters and 6th year and realized I wouldn't put myself through that torture again (and way worse torture).
Ahhh. My Masters in Reading was a joke that neglected all research and science.

Mine was excellent. Two clinical semesters. Worked with students that struggled in reading. Lots of research around the Science of Reading, 10-12 years before Science of Reading became the new thing.

That's fantastic. My daughter has ADHD and dyslexia, and her reading specialists have made an incalculable impact on her academic progress. ADHD meds have played a role, but I still give most of the credit to her teachers.
