Is this true? I mean can you name a kid just anything you want? Or is there some sort of procedure? (I know for example in Portugal there’s a lost of things you may not call your child: names resulting in puns, names from fictional movie characters like batman, this sort of thing. I also just went looking and read new Zealand also enacted some sort of law about this after parents named children things like “4real”, “anal” and "Queen Victoria"erson_facepalming:t2:erson_facepalming:t2:erson_facepalming:t2:erson_facepalming:t2

Yes, there’s no rules in America. In Germany I think the rules are super strict. Even you cannot give your child a gender neutral name. Which is a shame, as I’m sure hundreds of German parents would have liked a Bailey, or a Riley…

In Russia they can veto any name they like. Which is why we have a standardised spelling for every name. I think sometimes when people see variations in the translation of a name, they think for instance that Yevgenia is spelled differently from Evgeniya.

I like American name trends as you can pinpoint the year of competition by them. You’re not going to see many Carlys or Samanthas on a start list nowadays.

this is hilarious, because it at least is partly true. To a certain extent isn’t it true everywhere though? I have noticed certain names being everywhere here in Germany for example, while others dissapeared.

I think every country has naming trends, but in America, names seem to rise and fall with much bigger extremes. I can’t imagine any newborns will be called Britney this year.

I have a very old fashioned name for my age, there are not many Larissas it’s a grandmother name.

@MaryClare the leo biter is Ella Kate Parker. She did not have a good day. And very interesting, only did a FTY. I wonder if someone stepped in and put a stop to it.

Regarding rank order, it is only Jesolo and to paraphrase an infamous gymnastics saying, literally a city championship.

I do hope someone did step in regarding the leo biting as it’s a. Dangerous for the gymnast and b. So unbelievably embarrassing.

While it does appear they went in rank order, you have to look at the placements closer.
The 6 senior athletes make sense, even if they were the top 6.
Jones, McClain, Sullivan, Mueller, Frazier, Miller (in that order)

Team line ups per event
Jones (3) Sullivan (3) McClain (2) Mueller (2) Miller (1) and floor is missing a 3rd.
Mueller was 12.550 for 4th, Miller 12.350, McClain 12.300, Frazier 12.250 so really anyone of the four could go and be similar score to Rosen.

The 3 top scores are covered by 5 of the top 6 athletes and no one below the top 6 produced a score that screamed “take me for the team”. No floor specialist and only Roberson did 2 vaults, but her DTY only went 13.400. Ciena Alipio did get a 13.300 on beam but that event is already covered and that score is tied with Mueller.

Frazier also gets the nod for being a World Team member and a floor score that would have put her in finals (she got 2 per’d) and competed at DTB Pokal.

This is a different generation.
There is no obvious UB specialist (McCusker) BB specialist (Eaker) VT/FX (Carey/Skinner).
They are just all around athletes that might have a stronger event(s) than the others.

DiCello might have been a good choice but she is still recovering from surgery.

Super excited that Shilese Jones is back with a solid AA score, which looks like it includes a beam disaster. 6.600 E score and .1 ND. She definitely will help out the team on VT/UB

Russia is out indefinitely so not going to have much to compare.
However, the Doha results in finals showed that Russia isn’t that far ahead of the US.

Listunova’s DTY went 13.833

Listunova’s UB went 14.566
Minaeva’s UB went 13.366

Urasova’s BB went 13.200

Minaeva’s FX went 12.666
Urasova’s FX went 12.233

Mostly comparable to USA. Listunova’s UB routine is strong though…but Russia is always strong on UB.
