What would be your 5-4-3/5-3-3 line ups with this group?
Vault: Zhang, Tang, Sun, Luo
Bars: Wei, Luo, Tang, Zhang
Beam: Sun, Luo, Tang, Zhang
Floor: Tang, Zhang, Luo/Sun (whoever does better in qualifying does team)

Luo previously was pretty good on floor, including June of this year.
This was a 3,3 for height and distance.
.3 distance deduction for Sun’s vault seems wrong. I’ve looked at multiple other vaults of hers to confirm, and yeah, she seems to be doing quite well there.

But it begs the question, why aren’t there specific measurements to place to determine exactly what a deduction should be.

It varies by the gymnast’s height how far/high they will travel. Asking a 4’5" gymnast to get their toes as high as a 5’4" gymnast, for instance, would lead to uneven scoring. That’s why you don’t see things like “hit this specific height.”

Amplitude on an element is something concretely measurable that has nothing to do with a gymnast’s personal body height. You measure how high off the board someone is at the peak of the vault and the distance away from the board on landing. The former requires computer measurement for exactness (and this sport should be using computer replay for judging anyway), but the latter can be done with tape markers on the mat – you draw lines for exactly where is the .1 deduction for distance, where is .2, .where is 3, etc. Just need to create rules that state the exact lengths required.

Xiang Lulu - Floor Exercise, Event Finals

Acro:

3 x D (double pike, front double twist, double tuck)

Total Acro DV - 1.2

Dance:

2 x D (switch ring leap 1/2 / Sankova, split ring leap 1/2 / Ting)

3 x C (switch ring leap, split ring leap, full twisting split jump)

Total Dance DV - 1.7

Total DV - 2.9

CV

None

Total CV - 0.0

Dismount Bonus

double tuck (D) - 0.2

CR

Dance Passage - switch ring leap to switch ring leap 1/2
Salto with 360 LA turn - front double twist
Double Salto - double pike
Salto Backward and Forward - front double twist, double tuck

Total D - 2.9 + 0.0 + 0.2 + 2.0 = 5.1

Elements or Connections Downgraded

None

Credited D - 2.9 + 0.1 + 0.0 + 2.0 = 5.1

Deductions

double pike
(body posture on landing, chest low and forward) 0.1
(large step on landing, greater than shoulder width) 0.3

split ring leap
(balance adjustment) 0.1 ^ (To me there’s a bit of an awkward pause/stumble before she goes into the choreography.)

pause (before second tumbling pass) 0.1

front handspring
(bent knees) 0.1

front double twist
(crossed legs) 0.1
(insufficient height) 0.1
(large step on landing, greater than shoulder width) 0.3

pause (before third tumbling pass) 0.1

double tuck
(flexed feet) 0.1
(slight leg separation) 0.1 ^^
(body posture on landing, chest low and forward) 0.1 ^
(small hop on landing) 0.1

split ring leap 1/2
(body shape → foot at head height) 0.1
(balance adjustment) 0.1 ^ and ^^

Artistry
  • Insufficient involvement of body parts (0.1)
  • Exercise as a series of disconnected elements and movements (0.1), assessed because there is so much ‘empty’ space in the routine setting up the dance elements
  • Insufficient complexity or creativity of movements throughout exercise (0.1)
  • Poor choreography in the corner / lack of variety (0.1)
Total Deductions - (1.9 - 2.3), 7.7 - 8.1 / Actual 8.200

A gymnast who contacts the table during the repulsion phase at the board end and lands one metre from the end travels a greater distance than a gymnast who contacts at the back end and lands one metre from the table - and if if both contact at the board-end and one gymnast is 1.3m and another is 1.6m tall and both land one metre out then the smaller gymnast has travelled a greater distance. The FIG already tried to place a distance line at one metre in a past code.

Where someone takes off on the board is irrelevant, if the standard is distance measured from the end of the board. If you have a run-and-jump competition measuring the start from a specific line, it’s up to each competitor to takeoff appropriately at the line, rather than inches behind it, in order to maximize their measured end point. (on vault a gymnast obviously doesn’t want to take off from the very end of the board in order to maximize their amplitude, but it’s the same idea; the measured start point is standardized, so it’s up the the gymnasts to use the correct technique to achieve the standardized amplitude asked for)

The second part of your statement is alarming. A 1.3m gymnast has not traveled further than 1.6m gymnast if they land in the same spot…where are you getting this idea? The height is irrelevant, that’s like saying if you throw a 1.3m stick and 1.6m stick exactly 10 meters in front of you, they have somehow landed at a different distance from you. No…it’s the same.

Ou Yushan tumbling whip triple and landing a DTY not particularly well onto a mat over the pit, Chinese internal test event.

Tang Xijing tried a DTY and fell…

This first routine I had an 8.5 (A2) with a pretty harsh pen. I don’t think I’ve come out that high on beam all quad.

And the girl in the second clip. Her Switch Ring to Ring Jump. Jesus Christ. Her whole foot is above head height.

This is the new FX champion in China.
I wonder whether, with the focus over the last few Codes on body shape in dance elements, this is resulting in incentivising gymnasts to be less powerful and more flexible.

It’s very rare to have a back that bends backwards to the requirements of a Switch Ring with back foot above head height, whilst at the same time is rigid and strong enough to have the power to do a Double Double.

In fact, the top 8 gymnasts in this video would rival or beat the quality of any World or Olympic BB EF ever. It’s crazy that China have to leave home multiple gymnasts who could easily make a World final but for 2PC

ETA: The Yurchenko Roll at 9:42 is sublime!!

After watching these Chinese switch rings, I hope the rest of the world either improve theirs or get deducted appropriately.
