Someone needs to send some of the NCAA coaches over to China to teach them how to maximize their FTYs. The loose knees and lack of stretch bug me more than the pike down at the end. Like, I know vaulting isn’t everyone’s forte, but if you are going to be competing FTYs in elite, shouldn’t they be textbook?

I don’t mind easier vaults if they are done perfectly. Nastia’s Y1.5 from Beijing comes to mind.

This is a HUGE problem for China right now. They have not gotten the memo. And it’s a double whammy of 2 or 3 tenths for pauses before tumbles and spins, PLUS the artistry tenth. It’s a big whack that I don’t think the judges in China are taking.

I mean this is her routine unchanged from 2019. It’s not like it was crafted for this COP. She spent most of the last year recovering from surgeries.

China is doing the best with what they’ve got, nothing is operating under the usual circumstances because of Covid. Not everyone is training in the same places.

Some of them also got quarantined after an international competition too, I believe? That disruption won’t have helped.

As always, great write up by Spencer with a few team scenarios.

Was it a splatfest or is this indicative of the level of difficulty they’re doing?

Raisman’s BHS were pretty janky.

Wei Xiaoyuan’s UB is kind of wonky. Her handstands lean to the side. Also after all this time, China still hasn’t resolved their dead hang issue.

I think that was the lead up to 2020 Olympics and extended into 2021.
Based on how China did in Tokyo, with just a gold and silver on beam, I wouldn’t be surprised if he was not asked to continue working with the team.

Everything Raisman did was pretty janky.

I noticed Wei’s handstands, too, particularly related to her pirouettes. I think its because of that closed shoulder angle.

Oh 100%. I remember in Rio prelims I GASPED at Raisman’s DLO. The polishing up from Trials was apparent.
