Yeah, this one. I really like @Concorde 's breakdowns, but this pak deduction is literally always taken–even for the best UB workers. What is the correct grasp position to not incur a deduction? Is is a particular arm angle or a whole body alignment issue? And, should it be changed because I can see taking a deduction on a really low/flat catch, but everyone seems to have at least some angle and gets the deduction.

I definitely don’t deduct every Pak. The angle of completion-- arms and body line should be no greater than 30 degrees.

Simone might barely evade deduction too

I think Tang’s is probably acceptable too

Thankfully, it’s going away in 2022!

On a side note, I believe angle of completion requirements on the Pak salto actually started with the 1997-2000 COP. To receive D credit, a gymnast had to show clear support, which in practice was satisfied by either catching within 30 degrees of handstand, or by working directly into another element.

Well with Tang’s, which part of the body do you focus on: arms/legs or torso? Because they are at different angles. Or would she incur a different deduction non-straight body on catch?

(As an aside, I like the arched back paks, like Nastia’s, but I know others don’t like that version)

For handstand angles, you typically draw a straight line from the hands, through to the feet. If the legs were split (one leg is lower than the other), you would follow the lower leg.

I would deduct Tangs.

If not angle of completion then body alignment.
