What does an athlete need to score / do to qualify to the Games on each event?

I mean, I supose there are specialists out there who want to take a shot via the World Cup circuit - how realistc are anyone’s chances on a specific event?

I don’t mean to name who has a chance, I mean what do the gmynasts in general have to do to say make the cut on bars?

The top 2 on each apparatus following the World Cup series will get to go to Paris.

Your question can’t really be answered yet because we don’t know who will be competing for individual spots and also if Russian athletes will participate or not.

A lot of what ifs.

But we likely know at least some names who will want to try. who are they then? What are they currently scoring?

Who knows at this time?
No one has stated their intent to do so.

However, I would imagine any specialist that does want to go to Paris and is not yet qualified.

There are also gymnasts who are coming back from injury, but until those injury status is revealed we won’t know.

One athlete for sure is likely Chusovitina.

Scores won’t really matter so much as it’s not about score but placement in meets and getting the designated points per placement.

Yeah, i don’t think there is a way to say “a gymnast needs to average 13.666 on vault to qualify for the Olympics”.

All the events are in europe and asia, right?

Feb. 15-18: Cairo
Feb. 22-25: Cottbus
Feb. 28-Mar. 2: Doha
Mar. 7-10: Baku

That schedule is insane for so many reasons.

It’s pretty insane.

Not sure the need for a World Cup circuit of 4 meets (technically a gymnast can attend 3 and be all set with points, but still)

Might as well just do a darn Test Event again. It can be a multi day competition.
Have qualifications to narrow down to 8 on each event. Then finals.

Or they could be fancy like previous apparatus only worlds where there was a preliminary round, a semi final (top 16) and final (top 8)
Or even prelims, semi finals (top 8), finals (top 4)

This type of schedule is too grueling for the athletes.

Yes and finishing in early march is needlessly early, although I suppose the advantage there is that athletes can peak for the World Cup circuit then have enough down time to then peak again for the Olympics

Did they schedule it to make the travel as long as possible? Cairo-Cottbus-Doha-Baku feels like they were trying to see just how many miles they could make everyone travel.

It’s a lot. I know in theory a world cup series of multiple events could mean athletes being less likely to miss out due to a one off injury, but not when they’re so close together. Someone injured on 18th February stands a good chance of still being so on 7th March. It would have to be something like the individual circuit from last quad to mitigate the injury risk, but that means discriminating against new seniors.

Why aren’t events like the Pan-American Games an avenue to Olympic qualification?
Because they are a multi sports event that only certain counties are eligible to compete at? Any country in the world with a good enough gymnast can attempt to qualify via world cups

The other thing with the world cups is that it’s not expected that anyone will do all 4 pieces

Didn’t Luisa Blanco earn a spot? Maybe I misunderstood.

Continental championships, like Pan Am, are a qualification route. But only one AA spot each is available for WAG and MAG. So, yes, it’s a qualification route, but extremely narrow. Only for AA, and only 1.

Nothing seems to be an ideal solution for qualification meet timing in the Olympic year. Single events are inevitably bad timing for some poor soul. A long World Cup series means athletes needing 3 meets need to be in routine shape for a long time and end up losing a lot of their upgrade window. A condensed one has the effect we’re discussing here. And the WC is always plagued by geography issues.
