Is this the first competition where there were numerous submissions but no one got something named after them?

I do think it has been a mistake, widening the competitions that you can submit a skill at
I think I’m okay with it just because not everyone gets to go to a Worlds or Olympics. But maybe new skill submissions should come with the caveat that you will actually attempt the skill at some point in the competition.

I don’t think that would work. It would potentially be dangerous, and you’d have to make them do it in prelims

Yeah, a world cup or scam would be the place to try if you don't think you have it fully mastered. Of course, you want them to have it fully mastered before breaking it out, but when you are a part of a team (and an integral part of that team like Simone and Rebeca), you feel bad going for solo glory if failing will harm the team.

I agree that it's disappointing not to see new elements at the Olympics.

And I think that will be increasingly the case in future years. We're running out of new ideas, and some of the new ideas gymnasts have are being shot down by FIG with their stupid rules, e.g., it has to be a C or higher or it can't simply be a variation of another element, etc.

Confirmed — 0 new elements at this Olympics.

So I found his routine on YouTube, and Samir Air Said did NOT do his new element. Click to go to 1:40ish. It's supposed to be back lever press (through Maltese) to HS.

@Denn Samir Ait Said made Rings finals, so he still has a chance to compete it.

@MaryClare I have to disagree. I like that skills can be named at Continentals and World Cups. Some gymnasts will NEVER make a World or Olympics but can get a skill named here. I'm thinking of the MAG gymnast who got his double layout dismount off bars named for him at one of the World Cups. I am struggling to remember his name.
I think its a great opportunity. Maybe Suni will do a World Cup next year and get the "Lee" named after her.

ETA: Especially since the path to Worlds is now limited by having to qualify via Continentals, and specialists cannot qualify to Worlds this way. Before anyone could be entered.

I would be all for Simone, Suni, and Jade doing a post-Olympics world cup just to get the Weiler 1.5, Jaeger full, and triple-double layout named

@MaryClare and @irichluck21 I feel like you both raise valid points.

Maybe the compromise is that naming is possible only at Worlds, Olympics, and Continental Championships.

Personally I don’t agree with continentals as they happen at different times so it doesn’t give all athletes a fair chance to compete it first.
I apologise for sounding like Mykayla Skinner

@Denn There are several athletes that won't be chosen for Continentals as you only qualify to Worlds via team or AA.
Apparatus specialists won't be in the picture unless its a country that can't compete as a team.
I think World Cups is fine since it is a circuit based on indiviual appartus specialists. We saw many that qualified to the Olympics from the World Cup just do their pet apparatus in qualifications.

Couldn’t there be a stipulation that any new skill performed at continentals would be shared in name with those who successfully competed it at other continentals in same year? Just like if multiple gymnast compete same skill at worlds or O’s?
