Should this Worlds have even happened this way?

Well, now that someone has Covid, the equipment was all slippery, Hakateda is seriously injured, and it’s all a mess, I’m less enthusiastic about these games.

Agreed. Somehow, it managed to exceed expectations. It is interesting to note that the US still has the depth edge over everyone else. Kayla and Leanne were the only medalists to have not made it to the olympics.

Leanne should absolutely continue with elite.

But it will always have a huge asterisk IMO.

Fx was actually an ok final, bb was a splatfest but somehow better than other finals i remember, so

Let’s remember the real highlights of worlds this year: one touch warmups before event finals. It was worth holding just for that.

Ashikawa’s split jump to ring is exactly why the FIG went hard on ring positions.

We wouldn’t see them like that if they weren’t rewarded.

I could find myself getting quite attached to the concept of a warming down worlds after the Olympics. It helps with the transition. Like the world cup final used to be.

The medallists were primarily very good, which is nice. For WAG at least, but the MAG looked decent from what I could tell and we all love the Yulo double. The only ones where one might think hmm, that’s out of kilter with what we’d usually expect from a person finishing in that position are AA bronze, which really is only because Kyla fell, and the minor medals on vault. The AA 1-2 was righteous, Andrade is Andrade, the top 3 on beam are everything and for all that there are arguments about placings on bars and floor, there’s no significant issue with the quality of the routines and athletes concerned. There was a lack of depth, no getting round that, but then I did enjoy seeing new faces in worlds finals.

I really enjoyed the medalists, and I hope some of the big event exposure will help the smaller programs. For instance, I actually really enjoyed watching vaulters 4-8 in women’s event finals, even though I hadn’t expected to. It was nice seeing Romania in a floor final. I imagine Hungarian gymnasts may get a lift from this worlds.

@Doug1233 I have that bar routine at between a 7.9 or 8.2 E-score, depending on how much I want to hammer the dismount. It would have been a respectable score if she’d not slung the dismount out so much, though her handstands were just not there in this go. She just wasn’t getting her hips up over the bar on her casts.

Yeah, Becky gave them ample chances to deduct. Those handstands, that dismount, and I felt the Ray and Ezhova really lacked in amplitude. With her consistently poor dismount, she can’t afford to then be missing handstands all over the place.

Plus that raises the question… who actually are the big names amongst the existing field at the moment? Whatever happened with this worlds, Tokyo made it clear that WAG is undergoing a big shift at the moment. That would have been true even if the event hadn’t been held. Of the group who didn’t compete here and have higher profiles in the sport, the majority of them have unclear future prospects in elite and are at minimum taking some time out. There are some who obviously we’d expect to see next year like Listunova, the Gadirovas, Guan Chenchen etc, but the majority are either up in the air or just plain done.

All of that is true. But I took all those deductions and I still had an 8.2.

I had 8.4 for Downie. We have a situation where judges are now making up deductions that they perceive but which aren’t actually happening.

Examples:

1. I bet every judge took 0.3 on her full pirouette, or perhaps even 0.4 (0.3 for turn and 0.1 for posture in handstand). But if you pause the video, you can see that she finished the turn close to handstand.
2. I bet every judge deducted 0.3 on her Pak for the catch angle. But if you pause the video, you can see that it should be 0.

This is an ENORMOUS problem. There’s this push for judges to deduct so much that they now overpunish gymnasts for mistakes that they did not make.
