And in another example of the madness that we are overlooking, take a look at the Russian bars scores or the Chinese gymnast that got 2-pered after an inquiry changed the score of another Chinese gymnast.

Erm…

WHAT?!?!?

I hope the balance beam judges get it together.

What routine are you referring to?

I thought the beam judging looked ok.

If it’s GCC I can only imagine how many pause deductions she got. 5?

I’m rewatching so I can see the apparatus feed. The score before Sanne’s took at least 10 minutes so she had yo stand there for far longer than should be necessary. I think that had an impact on her and contributed to her not qualifying for the beam final. It’s hard to know what all was going on there because the cameraman was obsessed with filming Eythora fixing her hair, fixing her mask, pulling up her sleeves, wiping her face.

I think you have to dig through the different recordings or get lucky with something being posted on social media. Scott Bregman said something about a vault being opened August 9th (after the Olympics)

In the end, Biles, Lee, and Carey cover the US for all finals, exactly as AR predicted iirc. Bummed for Chiles but this judging surprise was foreseeable months in advance. Grace has a knack for doing just enough to make a team, and her selection is more justifiable after Chiles’ prelims than it was pre-OG. She always seems to have a significant error even when she hits 4 for 4, but I would still have her do AA in tf to rest Suni.

When I checked scores this am, I thought Russia leading was a fever dream. It’s just prelims, but this is the first time the US has been beat in a team comp since 2010 worlds.

Padurariu’s absence was definitely felt. 10th for Canada is a disappointing repeat of their Rio performance. 5 falls I think? Italy/Japan definitely left the door open for them to sneak into TFs with an average day too.

The Sri Lankan girl looked great. I hope we see her at worlds.

Jade is an incredible tumbler but everything in between would knock her out of contention in a perfect world. OSU is going to

If she gets a vault medal in the bag I would be rooting for her to do the Carey. Imagine, in the age of Simone Biles, Jade Carey would have the hardest element in the code.

edit: fixing typos

Especially if the floor is as bouncy as they report–she’ll never have a better opportunity (or another one unless she makes a post-college comeback) to pull it off successfully

Do. The. Carey.

Let’s go baby [clap clap clap!!!] Jade you are on fire this week and you won’t regret it

Who would have thought Jade Carey would do this well given how she looked at trials? Good coaching and great steadiness under stress. She has really performed to the best of her abilities so far.

Calling for a return to 36 in the AA is pointless, we know why it was reduced to 24 and why it can’t go back up to 36. When these rules were dreamt up in 2000/2001 it was with 6-4-3 in mind and with 6 member teams, much of the time, only 2 were doing AA. The 4-4-3 format has meant that event specialist has had to maintain a useable AA programme to be considered for selection. Ironically, it has given an unfair advantage to gymnasts whose country didn’t qualify a team, or are there as the individual athletes. There is no reason at all why the AA cannot be 3 per country. I know that within the powers that be, there are concerns over one country sweeping the medals but I think we’ve seen that the US, especially a post Simone US, are not infallible

Ou Yushan injured her feet very recently I believe, after she had regained the DTY. So I think she was already on the team and they were hoping she’d do the double. Also Lu Yufei and coaches were planning on doing the DTT but when they got to training they felt the vault was too hard because she equipment is new and hasn’t been used yet. Lu also downgraded her floor recently, taking out the triple

Tang has her DTY and Zhang the DTT. Guan Chenchen also has a DTY, but she and Zhang Jin would make for a weak UB team. Ou Yushan was also hoping to compete FX until her feet “[became] bad,” as a Twitter source said lol. In TQ, Ou did two Maloneys (one instead of her Komova II) on UB so her D score was much lower.

Lu Yufei also only recently had to take out her triple full on FX.

It’s unfortunate because this team had so much potential and then Li Shijia went down and everyone started dropping like flies and in the midst of all that, there was Tang Xijing to the rescue.

EDIT–Could China sub out Tang Xijing on beam for Ou Yushan? May be unwise and cruel tho

Yeah, we know exactly what the Russian lineups will be in 11 of the 12 TF routines and have done since the team was confirmed. Of course they’ll drop Listunova on vault and Akhaimova on bars and beam. Those are no brainers. It would take injury to do otherwise.

The only one with any element of surprise was whether to go with Urazova or Akhaimova on floor. That one is still genuinely open I think, they scored the same, but there are many more questions over the US lineups in TFs than Russia’s. The only American choice we definitely know at the moment is vault.

I would definitely put Urazova over Akhaimova on FX. If the tonic of judgment is that of preliminaries, they will take into account the execution, and Lilia’s is bad, and it also fails a lot. However, Urazova is very clean, calm and reliable, although, it is true, she has less difficulty, but a very good execution.
In qualifications:
Urazova D 5.3 E 8.333
Akhaimova D 5.8 E 7.833
