The comments on Reddit about authenticity on American television shows Yellowstone and Landman make me think every American man thinks he has complete knowledge ana d control of authenticity. dumpster fire.

My dad worked for a time for the FBI as a forensic toxicologist. This was at the height of The X-Files popularity, and as a teen in the 1990s, I was a devoted follower of the show.

But my dad! Oh my God, he would never miss a chance to say "that's not how we do things in the FBI!" Come on, man, it's a show about freaking ALIENS. This is not a show exactly worried about getting the minute details of FBI process correct. My mom finally banned him from entering the TV room on Sundays from 9-10 pm because she got sick of his righteous proclamations and me yelling at him to shut up.

Mind you, my dad was never once an FBI special agent. Never worked in the field, never led investigations. He spent all his time on the lab and occasionally testified in court. He wasn't even permitted to carry a firearm. Definitely never went chasing after worldwide conspiracies led by a small cabal of men. 🤣

But because I grew up just outside of DC, I had several friends whose fathers also worked for the FBI, including a few gun-totting special agents. We bonded over how insufferable our dad's were about how The X Files portrayed the FBI.

I've recently seen a lot of "I'm not racist, I just think Astrid in How To Train Your Dragon shouldn't be played by a mixed-race actress because it's unrealistic. Unlike the totally authentic dragons."
