I guess for domestic meets it’s up to USAG what they can wear? I can’t see the FIG changing the rules for MAG on the basis that some people feel it’s “too feminine”.

I am pro catsuit, I am pro sports hijabs, if you think either of those are “woke”, go and coach RG in Chechnya. But this feels like a regressive step and sends out the wrong message to young boys in the sport.

Interesting to see what Fred’s new uniform is and the designs. What could be different? Bike shorts instead of long pants?

Maybe no unitard under the shorts/pants? But what would that accomplish? And anything too baggy is going to make it impossible to judge accurately.

IIRC USAG allowed the Hamms to wear their tank shirts in 2008 but didn’t let them wear the longer shorts they also wanted.

I also don’t really understand why people have such a go at the men wearing a leotard. Look at weightlifters and rowers. They wear essentially the same thing but it’s even more revealing as they don’t have the longs or shorts over the top. But I never seem to hear about them getting grief.
Can’t imagine someone telling Talakhadze that he’s too much of a girl or whatever for what he wears.

I get the hate, it was "uncool" and "gay" to be on the swim team in high school (at least mine) because we "wore speedos" and "shaved our bodies".

but what he’s essentially doing is saying yes, what male gymnasts currently wear is “girly”. What sort of message is that sending to young boys in the sport who might be facing teasing or bullying due to their involvement? It just affirms stereotypes about males artistic sports.

As pointed out, it’s no different to the attire worn by male athletes in very “macho” sports.

Basically, Fred Richard has a hang up about “tights”. Also I’ve never heard them referred to as tights. Because they aren’t tights.

I'll have to see what the uniform looks like. I'm going to the meet.

Richard is already on the National Team, so if he gets neutral deductions for wearing non regulation uniforms, it won't matter. It remains to be seen if USAG will take the neutral deduction.

I don't see the FIG changing anything unless there are a lot of requests from other countries. The Japanese and Chinese would probably just roll their eyes.

I don't see pandering to people who "think gymnastics is for girls".

In the US, boys are sometimes not comfortable with the uniforms, so if it keeps them from quitting the sport, it's all good with me.

As far as tight clothing goes, in Track and Field you can pretty much tell the guys religion. Pommel pants are nothing.

I'll have to see what this looks like.

It doesn’t seem like a winning strategy.

Here is the post about it…
