Roberson has higher difficulty on all pieces except bars. It is her E score that is the problem.

Roberson’s E score on vault is good enough to be considered as a competitive vaulter. Wong’s execution on vault isn’t huge enough to outscore Roberson who has 5.2 and 5 D vaults.

Bob, to the best of my knowledge, DiCello has never shown 2 vaults as a senior.

Roberson needs to show she’s more valuable than one of Carey and Chiles to make it to worlds. That’s an almost impossibly tall order.

Nobody can take Carey and Chiles’ spots if they are healthy. Robenson is competing for Skye / Leanne’s spots. Every strength of potential team members are taken into consideration, like her two vaults.

In other news, Carlos Yulo has withdrawn due to an ankle sprain.

If Chiles and Carey are on the team, there’s no reason to take Roberson. She has two vaults and nothing else. There is no way that Roberson is fighting for the same spot as Leanne and Skye.

Roberson will still be in contention for Worlds, if Chiles or Carey or both were to go down, she would step right in.

That said, I don’t see her making Worlds or even as alternate.
I can see her making the Pan American Games team and winning vault and maybe floor.

With a core of Chiles, Carey, and Lee, you’re looking for two AAers with UB/BB strengths but can be thrown onto VT/FX lineups as leadoffs. Roberson does not fit the bill.

Roberson won’t be selected purely because of her vaults. She is a worlds contender also because of her beam and usable floor. Since the USA selection committee encourages two vaults, she still has an edge when the scoring margin between her and other contenders is close enough to make vault as a factor for selection. The report of the selection committee has already stated it as a factor for choosing team member / alternate.

She rarely hits beam, but yes, she did score well on floor internationally this year. But there isn’t going to be a margin big enough between her and another gymnast on the team to make it worth it.

The ticket for this team as it’s shaping up is going to be a reliably high number on bars (just like in 2008, when the COP disproportionately rewarded strong bars workers and Amanar vaults vs other events). That’s where the biggest margins between good and great are shaping up to be this quad, so prioritizing high scores on vault (already accomplished by the US team w/ Carey and Chiles, as well as DTYs from Jones/McClain/Blakely/Wong/etc) and bars (Jones and Miller are the only ones scoring high 14s) and just being as consistent as possible elsewhere is the name of the game for team selection across the board in WAG.

Tbh, I’m not really sure you can do much about the calendar. This event is in a weaker spot because it isn’t a warm up for Euros and Japan had their nationals last week, but if you think like that there would only be about three events a year. The MAG field is still quality. If you want to see world class gymnastics outside the major competitions MAG is where it’s at.

The World Cup venues are poor in terms of local interest in the sport but they aren’t bad in terms of travel for most active federations. Events held outside the Europe/Middle East region in the past have had consistently tiny entry lists. I do think it’s poor that with the ending of the AA World Cup series there are now no events in the US, UK or Japan, but realistically the fields wouldn’t be great anyway.

The basic problem is that the pool of WAG athletes who are genuinely competitive at the top level is tiny, and they only compete a handful of times a year. If every event could offer Swiss Cup prize money maybe that would change, but they can’t.
