Beginning tomorrow (8/16),China will hold the final trials for Asian Games and Worlds. It’s two days each for WAG and MAG; Uni Games participants can skip Day 1. With any luck, they’ll announce the teams this weekend or early next week. s

Solid Aussie team. Wonder if Ruby Pass will do her Yurchenko double twist on vault?
Looking forward to Aussies beam rotation (Breanna!), Kate McDonald on bars (love her high Tkatchev to Pak) and Georgia Godwin’s McIntosh on vault.

I know it’s because they selected the team back in May or whenever, but Hatakeda over Sakaguchi is a bold choice after the University Games.

Edit: It sounds like (via Google Translate) it’s an ACL for Watanabe, which isn’t good for next year. Japan seems to have an epidemic of ACL injuries - I think that’s now Watanabe, Yamada Chiharu, Kasahara Arisa and Junior Worlds medallist Yamaguchi Sara have all done ACLs in the last year.

It does feel like they’ve had an unusually high number of ACL injuries.

I can’t believe DSY didn’t make either team. I was also expecting Luo Huan over either TXJ or Zuo Tong. I’m surprised WXY didn’t make one of the general alternate positions but her bars have regressed

Wu Ran is likely the Worlds team alternate. HZF will probably only do UB in TQ and ZYQ will cover the other three events. QQY, OYS, and ZQY will probably do AA in TQ. So the vault situation looks like two FTYs and one FTT for TF…
VT: (QQY) OYS, ZQY, ZYQ
UB: (ZQY) OYS, HZF, QQY
BB: (ZQY) OYS, QQY, ZYQ (each of these gymnasts could win BB gold)
FX: (QQY) ZQY, ZYQ, OYS

Potential Asian Games lineup:
VT: (TXJ) ZXY, ZJ, YLM
UB: (ZJ) ZXY, ZT, TXJ
BB: (ZT) ZJ, TXJ, ZXY
FX: (TXJ), ZT, ZXY, ZJ
Yu Linmin will surely do only VT. Zuo Tong is the weakest on VT so I’d suspect she’d sit out that event, unless Tang Xijing does.

I know they can compensate with high D scores for hit bars and beam, but weak vaulting is sure putting themselves in a significant hole. 2 FTYs and a FTT is even weaker than last year. And if they don’t hit bars and beam, well, we’ve all seen what happens.

Yeah, the one thing I might’ve changed is Zhou Yaqin (or Zhang Qingying) for Zhang Jin instead, since ZJ has her DTT back. The selected team is very competitive on bars, beam, and floor. It might be a good strategy to forget about vault entirely this year, and focus on the other three events. But next year they’re going to want at least two 5.0+ vaults on the Olympic team, I would expect

I have the biggest issue with Zhou Yaqin on the Worlds team. She’s lovely to watch, but she has no international experience, and her BB hinges on some iffy skills and combinations.

there was a rumor she over-rotated her FTY on the first day of trials and did a DTY?? Not sure this was ever disproven. But that would certainly make her case. Otherwise, yeah, she’s a two-event gymnast and I agree with what you said about her beam

China’s MAG teams. Zhang Boheng and Zou Jingyuan to Asian Games. I guess they really want the AA title there.

yeah, she’s rightfully gutted 😦

Qiu Qiyuan and Zhou Yaqin both use the FTY as their primary vault. Sometimes QQY does the front pike 1/2 but I’d anticipate three FTYs and a FTT

The GBR MAG team is

James Hall
Harry Hepworth
Jake Jarman
Courtney Tulloch
Max Whitlock (unlike BG I don’t feel the need to include honours every single time!)

Swiss MAG team: Christian Baumann, Benjamin Gischard, Luca Giubellini, Taha Serhani, Noe Seifert

It felt like Fraser in particular was sailing pretty close to the wind last year, in terms of surgery and injury management.

Yeah, definitely the home city CWGs and home country worlds led to decisions that he might not have otherwise made

So far half the EF titles will not be defended.

UB, BB
FX, PB, HB
